Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two fragments of Roman amphorae dating to AD 43-410. Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Swindon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete late medieval lead pilgrim's ampulla (holy water flask) dating to the period AD 1350-1530. The ampulla is incomplete as the neck is missing. All that remains is the rounded body of the ampulla which has been flattened. The cast marks along the edges are visible. The flattening of the ampulla means that the decoration is not very clear but it appears to have scallop shell decoration (the symbol of pilgrimage) on one side and there appears to have been a decorative motif on the other side. Ampullae were designed to contain a dose of thaumaturgic (magic or miracle) water…

A post medieval-modern bone apple corer. The period 17th century has been suggested for this object but it may date to as late as AD 1900. The object is also similar to a bone fid (used to splice rope e.g. on ships' rigging) (Cf LON-8DE7F3) described as a marlin spike) or a cheese scoop. The object is made from the long bone of a sheep. The bone has been cut across the shaft and retains the joint and part of the shaft. The shaft of the bone has then been sliced in half lengthways to form a curved scoop and the cancellous or trabecular spongy bone from the centre has then been scrap…
