A Roman Black Burnished ware ceramic sherd from a vessel dating to the period c. AD 43 - 410. The sherd is roughly square in shape and is probably a plain rim from a 'dog dish' style bowl. The fabric is orangey-black in colour and is darker coloured on the outside wall. Sandy inclusions are visible. The sherd measures 38.31mm in length, 33.5mm in width, is 7.49mm thick and weighs 12.97g.

It is irregular in shape and is a section from the wall of the vessel. The fabric is a reduced grey colour with sandy inclusions (some quite large - 3mm). The sherd measures 30.2 in length, 24.81 in width and 6.03 in thickness. It weighs 5.72g.

Attached to the ball, is a section of corroded iron which presumably originally formed the attachment to the furniture. The sherd is part of an Oxfordshire fineware vessel, possibly a style C82.3 with a broad, shallow bottom with a base which is slightly sloping. The bottom then carinates into the straight, vertical walls of the vessel. The fabric is red with a grey, reduced cored. Inclusions are visible and comprise dark brown fragments (possibly iron?) set in a micaceous matrix. The sherd is undecorated and is abraded, so missing any surface gloss.
