A complete Roman (AD 43-100) copper alloy Colchester Derivative brooch. The brooch measures 59.40mm in length, 35.53mm wide, 18.67mm thick and weighs 19.49 grams. In plan, the brooch is T-shaped and D-shaped in cross section. The T-shaped wings are C shaped in cross section with a hollowed area for the spring and span, 35.53mm. They are decorated with double lines at the terminal ends and in the centre next to the bow. The bow extends from the front of the wings with a slight hump at the top. An incomplete Roman copper-alloy gilded oval plate brooch (AD 100-300 possibly 400) of Hattatt's 'Centre-boss' type, with a brown and cream glass stone set in the centre. Missing the pin. Cf Hattat 1989 p364. The central oval setting has walls retaining the stone. The glass stone measures 16.26mm in length by 12.22mm wide. The brooch is 26.15mm in length, 21.37mm wide, 8.72mm thick (12.89mm includes the plate of the brooch) and weighs 7.01 grams. The plate surrounding the centre has evidence of gilding.
