A fragment of a copper alloy Iron Age/Roman cosmetic mortar dating to 100 BC-AD 300. The fabric of the mortar is dark brownish-red suggesting a high iron content. The mortar is incomplete and is very worn. The fragment comprises a small part of the end-loop (which is not complete) which was positioned at the end beneath the terminal. All that remains of the loop is a small point beneath the mortar and a short downwards curving truncated point at the end of the mortar. An incomplete cast coppper-alloy Roman cosmetic mortar dating to AD 43-150. It has an elongated crescent shaped profile with an integral loop end one end (now broken) - there may have been a double loop as there are two curves. The body of the mortar is 'U' shaped in section, which tapers in width and depth towards each terminal becoming shallower.
