The object is a zoomorphic single-loop buckle frame which is missing its pin and the pin retaining bar. The frame is bent but was originally D-shaped with Borre-style animal heads at the ends of the bar and the mid point of the outer edge. The frame is D-shaped in cross-section and, although very worn, retains traces of stamped decoration along both edges (possibly stamped triangles). All three animal head knops have tapering, snub-nosed muzzles with large, rounded ears at the back, the ears have a central recess. The eyes of each are circular recesses. Between the eyes the details of the ridge of the nose and face are formed by linear grooves. The groove between the ears on the central head knop presumably forming the groove for the tip of the pin. The mouth has a transverse linear recess, with a shorter and shallower recess above, denoting the nose.

A medieval copper alloy buckle plate dating to c AD 1200-1400. The buckle plate is incomplete and is bent and damaged. The remnant of the buckle plate comprises a rectangular sheet of copper alloy. The attachment end is truncated in line with two rivet holes, with a third, central rivet hole below the buckle end. Beyond the central rivet hole are the truncated remnants of one of the recessed hooks that looped over the offset bar of the buckle frame and then looped back down to the central rivet. There is evidence of gilding on the front of the buckle plate.
The plate weighs 2.02g and measures 28.14mm length, 17.22mm in width, 0.79mm in thickness and 7.16mm in height (where the plate has been bent).

An medieval copper alloy buckle dating to c AD 1150 - 1250. The buckle is missing the bar which holds the pin. The object comprises an ovoid frame with hooks extending from each of the long sides of the oval frame. The hooks terminate in a zoomorphic head which may be a snake or possibly a dog and which face each other across the centre of the front of the buckle. The zoomorphic heads comprise a snout which broadens out and forms a small 'brow' ridge and on top of the head are two raised horns or ears. The hooks are slightly raised above the frame (at one side the zoomorphic terminal appears to have been squashed down). It appears that there was a pin along the centre of the length of the buckle. At one end is the remnants of a copper alloy pin and at the other the frame is damaged and the hole for the central pin has been ripped open. There is evidence of gilding over the whole of the buckle. However, there is no evidence where a buckle pin may have been placed as there is none of the wear that would be expected. This type of object has also been identified as a brooch. It seems more likely that it may have been a clothing fastener, possibly with the zoomorphic terminals acting as hooks.
Dimensions: 20.34mm in length, 32.52mm in width (across the two zoomorphic terminals), 2.93mm in thickness (of the frame) and 7.21mm height (of the zoomorphic terminals) and weighs 4.48g.
A similar artefact described as a brooch is published by Saunders (2012: fig. 4, no. 8) and is attributed to the early to mid-thirteenth century. More complete examples, such as SWYOR-1CB26C, would suggest that the notches originally held a separately made copper alloy bar, and that the object functioned as a buckle, rather than brooch, although given its small size a functional use seems doubtful. AD 1500-1650. The buckle comprises of one of originally two oval loops from a symmetrical buckle frame, wit a narrowed bar flanked by knops. The copper alloy wire in survives in situ, wrapped around the bar. The front of the frame is decorated with cast foliate or 'vinescroll' decoration.
The buckle is 27.10mm in length, 21.49mm in width, 2.79mm in height (7.23mm across the loop of the pin) and 1.79mm in thickness. It weighs 3.32g.
A number of extremely similar buckles with more complete plates can be seen recorded on this database, see for example: SOM-0F8134, SUSS-C9A2E0, LON-5274E3. The trilobed terminals and otherwise similar decoration of these examples is compared to sword belt fittings of the the early Post-Medieval period (see, for example, SOM-364E5B) and a similar date is suggested.3636150016504WILTSSWM 54242019-03-19T14:21:46Z2023-07-24T12:20:30Z3.322.79PAS5C90FAFA00116F1.7921.4927.11714141427439251718343925WiltshireWiltshireHankertonST989051.60882956-2.030277166WILT-CA338ECopper alloy10627CompletePOST MEDIEVALx41047POST MEDIEVALx41047x41047Metal detectorReturned to finderWILT0FAFA1.jpg1097803images/wpartridge/South WestCertain12023-07-24T11:20:30.146ZHampshire10CountyPOST MEDIEVAL1Metal detectorWILT36BA14.jpg1776541178291PMWhite metal coated2.96DistrictCertain4WILT435111650Thruxtonx410474.65Test Valley106272018-04-11T10:02:05ZReturned to finderSouth EastCirca
A post medieval copper alloy double loop buckle dating to c AD 1550-1650. The buckle is incomplete as it was originally a spectacle buckle but is now missing one loop. The remaining fragment could still have worked as a buckle. The buckle comprises an oval loop with moulded possibly floral decoration at the centre top which acts as the rest for the pin. The decoration comprises a scroll on either side and central 'stalk' with curving sides which is topped with some small raised lines and which ends in a blunt point. The blunt point joins to the sides which narrow gradually to the bar and curve down towards the edges. At the base of the loop, there are two small decorative knops and there is evidence that these originally joined to a second loop. The back of the buckle is flat and undecorated. There is a pin which is wound round the pin bar and narrows to a point at the tip. There is evidence of silvering or tinning.

A post medieval copper alloy double loop oval buckle or sword belt hanger dating to c AD 1500-1630. This is a specialised type of spectacle buckle which was used to suspend a sword belt via a separate hooked fastener on the end of the strap. The sword belt hanger has a circular lateral suspension loop perpendicular to the frame. The frame comprises a double loop with a central bar. The loops have angled outer edges which creates a point half way along sides of the frame and at the top and bottom shoulders of the frame so that the top and bottom edges are both straight (apart from the suspension loop). The buckle is mid green and there is evidence of a dark brown patina on the surface suggesting it may have been black coated. The back of the sword belt hanger is undecorated and the frame edges are angles in towards the centre of the frame. The frame is angled so that the inner and outer edges of the frame create a decorative rib in the centre. The back of the buckle is undecorated. The pin has a large loop round the strap bar and as it curves around at the front, it is decorated with two raised ribs before gradually narrowing towards the tip. The underside of the tip has been shaped with a slight curve to fit into the groove. The strap plate is missing but there is evidence of wear at both sides of the strap bar where it was originally positioned. The patina is dark green, with some light green marks. The buckle weighs 9.71g and measures 36.44mm in length, 40.62mm in width and 2.03mm in thickness. Cf Whitehead, R, 2003, Buckles 1250-1800, Greenlight Publishing, Witham p 20, no 70.

A copper alloy post medieval double loop buckle dating to c AD 1660-1720. The buckle is incomplete and has been damaged and squashed together with its plate. The remaining fragment comprises a semi-circular frame with a separate spindle which has been inserted through. It appears that the buckle was originally sub-annular but the second semi-circular part of the fram is incomplete. The frame is D-shaped in cross section and the sides of the frame are angled outwards towards the lower edge. There are the remnants of the plate or chape which comprises a single sheet of copper alloy folded over the spindle with a slot cut in the centre for the pin (which is missing). The upper edge of the plate is curved to about the size and shape of the buckle frame (this may have been the lower edge in use but is now framed by the buckle). The upper side (or possibly lower side in use) is heart shaped and terminates in the remnants of three stubs which may originally have been an anchor chape. There is a hole pierce through the centre of the heart shaped section the other side of the folded plate which presumably had a rivet which fixed the two parts of the plate together. There is evidence of gold plating over the buckle frame and the plate.
The buckle weighs 7.23g and measures 24.37mm in length, 29.42 in width and 7.82 in height.
Cf Whitehead, R, 2003, Buckles 1250-1800, Greenlight Publishing, Witham p 96 (for anchor chape no IV) and p 97 No 601 (for the frame and plate design).

A copper alloy possible Roman buckle plate dating to c AD 43-410 (although the form may suggest a medieval date). The buckle plate comprises a single sheet of copper ally folded in two with a slot cut out of the fold to hold the pin and the folder slightly wider to hold the pin attachment bar. At the open end of the plate there are two attachment loops pierced through both plates. The back of the buckle plate is undecorated except for two small notches at the end of the plate. The top of the plate is decorated in the centre with two concentric circles with hatching between them and in the centre a dot surrounded by four other dots which are surrounded by rings. At the end of the front of the plate there are two incised lines across the plate and the end is divided into three by two notches. The central section is gently curved and the the sections at each end have four small notches. The patina is dark green. The buckle plate weighs 2.86g and measures 27.19mm in lengthy, 14.64mm in width, 3.35mm in height at the fold and 0.63mm in thickness.

A copper alloy medieval D-shaped buckle dating to c AD 1250-1500 (the radiating line decoration may make this buckle early medieval). The buckle is complete. Unusually the buckle is not made with a continuous frame as the pin attachment bar comprises two pieces of metal placed on top of one another. The buckle frame comprises a flat D-shaped piece of copper alloy. The frame is rectangular in cross section and narrows sharply towards the pin attachment bar to create a pin which is semi-circular in cross section. The inner corners of the D have small notches cut out which allows the two semi-circular pins to be bent inwards and placed one above the other to create a bar which is loosely circular in cross section. The front of the buckle is decorated with five pairs of incised lines radiating across the frame, and with the central pair creating the placement for the buckle pin. The pin comprises a single piece of copper alloy which is pointed and gradually flares out to create a flat plate which is folded over the pin attachment bar. The buckle weighs 2.79g and measures 20.99mm in length, 26.5mm in width and 1.19mm in thickness. The patina is mid green. Cf Whitehead, R, 2003, Buckles 1250-1800, Greenlight Publishing, Witham p 18, nos 40 and 42 (but neither has the unusual bar arrangement).

A medieval copper alloy T-shaped buckle of 13th- or 14th-century date. The buckle is complete and comprises a rectangular frame with an integral slot at right angles, and separate copper-alloy bar on which a copper-alloy pin hinges.
The frame is wide but short, and undecorated. It has a grooved pin rest in the centre of the outside edge. At the opposite side (the inside edge) there is a rectangular slot at right angles to the frame, which thickens to accommodate a hole for the separate bar. The pin hinges on the bar and fits snugly into the slot; its movement is limited by the fit of the frame. The pin is squared off at the point so that it is flush with the edge of the frame. The pin is square in cross-section but is stepped outwards on the underside, and on the top it is stepped up before curving downwards and shaped to match the profile of the frame.
Beyond the point where the pin is hinged, there is a short area of solid plate, rectangular in cross-section, which ends in a raised rib on the sides and top surface. Beyond the rib is a rounded loop with a circular hole pierced through it in the same plane as the rest of the buckle, i.e. from front to back.
There are some filing marks on the pin and on the frame. The reverse of the buckle is flat and undecorated. The patina is dark brownish green. The buckle weighs 9.87g and measures 37.64mm in length, 28.41 in width and the frame is 3.35mm thick.

Pairs of similar buckles, but with hinged ends rather than loops, are recorded at HESH-132E83 and BERK-703D40 still attached to swivels which can be dated to the 13th or 14th century. It seems likely that these buckles had a specialist use, perhaps as pairs on animal leashes.
