A post medieval-modern bone apple corer. The period 17th century has been suggested for this object but it may date to as late as AD 1900. The object is also similar to a bone fid (used to splice rope e.g. on ships' rigging) (Cf LON-8DE7F3) described as a marlin spike) or a cheese scoop.
The object is made from the long bone of a sheep. The bone has been cut across the shaft and retains the joint and part of the shaft. The shaft of the bone has then been sliced in half lengthways to form a curved scoop and the cancellous or trabecular spongy bone from the centre has then been scrap…
