An incomplete late medieval lead pilgrim's ampulla (holy water flask) dating to the period AD 1350-1530. The ampulla is incomplete as the neck is missing. All that remains is the rounded body of the ampulla which has been flattened. The cast marks along the edges are visible. The flattening of the ampulla means that the decoration is not very clear but it appears to have scallop shell decoration (the symbol of pilgrimage) on one side and there appears to have been a decorative motif on the other side. A medieval lead ampulla dating to c AD 1350-1530. The ampulla is complete, although worn and flattened. The ampulla comprises a small vessel in the shape of a flask with a globular section at the bottom, a long broad neck and handles at either side where the bottom joins the neck. A lead papal bulla of Pope Alexander III dating to AD 1159-1181. On the obverse is written ALEX / ANDER / PP III (in three lines) surrounded by a circle of pellets. PP stands for pastor pastorum - 'shepherd of the shepherds'. The reverse depicts the heads of St Peter and St Paul facing each other, each in a vesica-shaped compartment defined by beading, cross pattee with long foot between the heads and SPA SPE above. A post medieval lead probable cannon ball dating to c AD 1500-1600. The cannon ball is almost spherical with hammered edges making the circumference irregular. There is a small hole 4.28mm in diameter in the cannon ball, it is not clear whether this was the site of casting sprue or where the cannon ball was damaged as there are cracks running away from the hole. It is not clear whether the cannon ball has been fired. The size of the cannon ball suggests it may have been for a Serpentine cannon which had a bore of 1.5 inches (38.6mm) and shot weighing 8 oz (227g). The cannonball weighs…

A cast lead cloth seal dating to the period AD1500-1950. The cloth seal comprises two discs of lead which may have been joined and folded over to create a single disc. There is a short tab extending from the disc and between the two discs are two iron wires which extend out of the tab. One side of the disc is smoother than the other. The seal is damaged and any markings on the seal are indecipherable. The cloth seal weighs 9.1g and measures 32.85mm in length, 19.80mm in width and 4.20mm in depth.

A post medieval Post Office lead bag seal from AD c 1660-1700. It measures 20.13mm in diameter and c.5.38mm in thickness, weighing 9.81g. There are perforations at opposite sides of the seal where it has been cramped onto a cord which passed throught the centre of the seal. The obverse depicts a crown above G POS above possibly a rose. The reverse is difficult to identify but may depict one or more shields. This seal would have been used to secure the contents of mail bags or sacks.

A post medieval Post Office lead bag seal or an alnage seal dating from AD c 1600-1725. The seal is incomplete and comprises a single bent disc with a section extending out of it which would have created the loop or join to the second disc. The face of the seal depicts a bust of the monarch (possibly Anne) facing right with the legend OF ENG:LAND around it and a circle of pellets surrounding the design. The relief designs on these alnage seals are characterised by fine detail resulting from well engraved dies. The reverse is undecorated.

A medieval lead spindle whorl dating to c AD 1100-1500. The spindle whorl is biconical and truncated at each point. It appears to be well worn and is chipped around the central hole and has a large gash across one side. There is a central hole 11.64mm in diameter. The spindle whorl is decorated on one side with two concentric rings of raised pellets (c 11 in the outer ring and c 7 in the inner ring). The other side is decorated with 11 radiating raised ribs with a pellet between each pair. The spindle whorl weighs 41.09g and measures 29.02mm in diameter and is 12.72mm thick.

The weight is biconical and there are marks at each of the pointed ends of the iron bar passing through that probably formed a hanging loop at one end. In the middle of the widest part of the weight is a hole with a sub-square brown mark round it - which may have been an alternative hanging mechanism.

A Roman lead steelyard weight with an iron attachment loop in its apex. The weight is incomplete but appears to have originally been conical in shape with a flat top where the loop attaches. It weighs 35.07gm and measures 26.32mm maximum width (15.51mm minimum width/thickness) and 34.34mm in height. The loop measures 20.31mm in height and 12.60mm in width. The lead has become white in colour and the iron loop has evidence of corrosion.

A Roman lead steelyard weight, dating to the period c. AD 43-410. The weight is circular in cross section and bi-conical in plan. At its apex there is evidence of an iron suspension loop which is missing. The steelyard is greyish cream in colour with orangey brown patches and two orangey brown corrosion marks at the top from the suspension loop. The steelyard weight weighs 158g and measures 46.71mm in height and 45.19mm in diameter.

A medieval lead token dating to c AD 1400-1500. The token is decorated on both sides. On one side there is a cross with chevrons possibly in two adjoining quarters and a swirling looped decoration in the two other quarters. On the other side, there is an off centre cross with a double line running through the centre of the offset cross line and lines radiating out to the edges of the token. The dating is based on the similarity of the crude decoration to a silver long cross penny.
