A knapped lithic implement of Neolithic to early Bronze Age date, circa 4000 - 2300 BC. The implement is a thumbnail scraper, designed to be held between the thumb and forefinger, formed from a secondary flake which is D-shaped in plan and triangular in section. The ventral surface is smooth with subtle ripples of percussion, although the striking platform has been damaged. The dorsal surface displays minimal retouch. The flint is a grey colour. The implement is 19.3mm long, 14.6mm wide, 4.4mm thick and weighs 1.30g. Scrapers are fairly ubiquitous throughout prehi…

The object is three dimensional and comprises half a 'moustache', with the appearance of a hedgehog with its nose in the air.  This object is one of two separate parts of a composite 'moustached-shaped' fitting.  The body has multiple longitudinal incised lines on the upper part of the 'moustache' which taper to a plain point. The base of the object has an oval…

An incomplete Middle to Late Bronze Age copper alloy sickle, probably dating to c. 1500-800 BC. The surviving fragment comprises a sub-triangular, curving section of the blade, tapering into an abraded point at the tip. Both edges are similarly abraded. The blade is lenticular in cross section, with a central ridge on both faces, tapering into the edges. The blade is truncated by an old break. Dimensions: length 49.7mm; width 19.2mm; thickness 3.5mm; weight 8.00g. cf. a similar, but more complete sickle found at Edington Burtle (Pearce 1983: 512-513, no. 648). The fragment is to…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A late Neolithic to early Bronze Age thumbnail scraper dating to c 2500-1500 BC. It is likely to be a tertiary flake as there does not appear to be any evidence of the original cortex, although the scraper is now completely recorticated and the patina is creamy white. It is broadly D-shaped. There is evidence of the bulb of percussion and concoidal rings on the ventral face. Around the curve of the dorsal face, there is short, sub-parallel, semi-abrupt retouch. The thumbnail scraper weighs 4.96g measuring 22.7mm in length, 28.32mm in width and 9.31mm in thickness.

A copper alloy possible horse harness ring of Bronze Age to Roman date (c. 1500 BC - AD 410). The ring measures 16.76mm in diameter (internal diameter 8.76mm), is 4.31mm thick and weighs 4.21 grams. It is circular in shape. The interior surface is smooth and shows evidence of wear. The ring is copper alloy with a high tin content giving the ring a silvery appearance. Similar rings have been discovered in a number of Bronze Age hoards and have been suggested as horse harness fittings, as being part of the handles of a sheet-metal cauldron of Class A1 (Type Tul-na-cross) and Class B1…

The tip of a copper-alloy socketed spear dating from the middle to later Bronze Age (c. 1500-700BC). The spearhead tip has a rounded mid rib with narrow wings. The wings are chipped, perhaps due to thinning of the metal from corrosion which may have led to some losses from the outer edge of each wing. The surface has a stable, slightly pitted, patinated surface of green-brown colour. The surviving length is 46.64mm, with a maximum width of 10.04mm (and depth of 7.80mm) and weight of 11.45g. A similar, though larger, example (LIN-CE5674) can be seen on this database.
