County: Central Bedfordshire

Incomplete Roman copper alloy bird shaped mount. The object is in the shape of a board, though which species is difficult to determine. It is likely to be a duck or some other waterfowl, as these were common in the Iron Age and Roman period. There are two projections at the base of the object which appear to have once formed a ring. This suggests it may have been a finger ring or ring fitting. Similar examples have been recorded on the PAS database, cf. LIN-3AEB83. Dimensions: height: 19.96 mm; length: 20.06 mm; width: 16.03 mm; weight: 10.55g.

Post Medieval copper alloy mount, dating 16th-17th century. It is circular in shape with the front highly worn, so that the design is no longer clear. However, it may be possible that the front depicts a female bust facing left. On the back of the object are two integral rivets. It is covered with a light green patina. The brooch is 2.66 grams, 16.09 mm diameter

Seven Post Medieval bone mounts, dating AD 1550-1650. The mounts are of a range of shapes and all have incised decoration on one side only. They probably come from a box and have evidence on the reverse of file marks, used to ensure they were secure. All have a dark brown pattination and are in various states of completeness. 1. The square mount has a central circular perforation, which probably would have contained a rivet. There is an engraved circle running around the perforation with a cross extending outwards from it, the ends meeting the edges of the mount. In between the cro…

An incomplete Medieval decorative bone dagger terminal, probably dating to the 15th century. The object is formed from the long bone of a large animal, probably a cow. It is sub rectangular in shape, flaring from the top to the bottom, and is slightly curved. The object would have fitted at the end of a scale-tang dagger to form a decorative terminal. Based on the curvature of the object, this would have been a particularly large dagger. It has been sheered at one edge so that the entirety of the decoration is no longer visible. The object is decorated on one side with an engraved …

A Post Medieval iron hooked mount or escutcheon, dating to the 16th century. The object is ovoid in shape with a small rounded projection at the widest end and a hook projecting from the narrowest end. There are two rivet holes, one at either end of the plate, both of which have the heads of the rivet and part of the shanks still in situ. Based on the curviture of the object it is likely from a vessel, with the hook pointing outwards. The mount has a mid-dark grey pattination with patches of light brown and orange on both sides and some light grey concreted material on the back of the…

An unfinished Post Medieval lead alloy fitting, dating to the 16th century. The object is formed of a fleur-de-lys shaped plate with a rectangular tab below. Extending below the tab is a rounded projection which resembles a hing joint, though has no perforation for an axial bar. There is a four-petalled flower decoration on the outer face of the fleur-de-lys and a double line engraved on the rectangular tab. There is a bevelled edge running around the plate. On the reverse there are clear traces of production using a cuttlefish mould, with curvilinear lines running parallel across …

A late Medieval-Post Medieval lead alloy mount, dating AD 1425-1525. The mount is in the form of a six-petalled flower with a rivet through the centre. The rivet is square in section and tapers to a point, passing through the other side of the mount and bent so that it is flush with the back. There is a casting seem running across the centre on the back of the object. The object is slightly concave, though it is not clear whether it is intentional or accidnetal. One of the petals has a small round perforation which is likely accidental. There is a dark grey pattination across all surf…

Two Medieval lead alloy mounts, dating to the early 15th century. These mounts have a flat, circular head with a single integral rivet on the back. The heads are decorated with a raised central boss and beaded edge to form a flower. The rivet is bent so it lies flat with the head. There is a casting seam running down either side of the rivet on both. A very similar mount is published in Egan & Pritchard (1991, no. 813) and comes from a context dated AD 1400-1450. This example is likely of a similar date. Dimensions 1: length: 28.80 mm; thickness: 3.89 mm; diameter of head: 8.40 …

A Post Medieval copper alloy mount, dating to the 16th century. The mount is solid cast and is in the form of a Tudor rose, encased in leaves, surmounted by a ducal crown. The crown has three large prongs, two bifoliate and one trefoil in the centre, with smaller prongs in between. There is a projection beneath the rose which appears to be part of the stem. On the reverse is a square sectioned integral rivet. The object has been bent slightly and perforated just below the crown, likely as a result of the object being bent. An incomplete Iron Age terminal or pommel, dating 100BC-AD 43. The object is hollow cast and spherical in shape. There is a large circular opening on one side, with a rectangular projection extending from the edge of the opening. A thick rim surrounds the opening. The projection is broken at the end but there are traces of a circular perforation which would have held a rivet to attach the object to a handle. There is evidence of a break on the opposite side of the opening, suggesting there were originally two projections. There is a circular cast opening on the side of the object. The…

An incomplete Post Medieval lead alloy mount, dating AD 1500-1700. The mount is rectangular with an integral circular rivet on the reverse. The rivet has now been worn to a small bump. The mount has been cut, as evidenced by part of a casting seem or secondary rivet on the back along one of the shortest edges. The front is decorated with lettering and appears to have a seam running around the edge, which acts as a border. The lettering is W (VV overlapping) and probably half of an X. Alternatively it would be a C and M. The object has a mid grey pattination and there are traces of con…

An incomplete Medieval copper alloy mount, possibly from a crucifix. The object is hollow cast and in the form of an equal armed cross moline with the object extending beyond the terminals of the cross. It is flat on one side and slightly rounded on the other, suggesting there was a front and back. Two of the arms and the central section of the object are open on the back, though this may be due to damage rather than intentional. The projections beyond the cross have broken and worn edges, though one appears to end just after the curls of the moline. This may indicate it was not much …
