A late Iron Age cast bronze 'Horn Cap'. These enigmatic objects were once thought to be chariot decorations but more recent thinking has proposed them as the heads from ceremonial maces or sceptres. What is certain is that they are extremely rare. Only around twenty examples are known to exist, and none have been found outside Britain. A similar Horn Cap was discovered at Llyn Cerrig Bach on the island of Anglesey, famous sanctuary of the Druids. Other examples have have been found at Maiden Castle, Ham Hill and there have been a small cluster from the Thames Valley. This examp…

A worn copper-alloy Roman sestertius of Crispina, dating to c. AD 178-88 (Reece Period 9), [SALVS S C], Salus seated left feeding snake at altar. Mint of Rome. RIC III, p. 442, nos. 672a-b. Crispina’s coinage was traditionally dated to c. AD 178-182, but more recent research suggests that she was probably not exiled to Capri until AD 188. Therefore, we date her coins to c. AD 178-188; although some coins probably date to AD 178-80, we cannot be sure which they are so all Crispina’s coins are assigned to Reece Period 9 (AD 180-192).
