Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: MODERN
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete cast copper alloy strap fitting or belt hook dating to the Modern Period (18th to 20th Centuries AD). The fitting takes a reverse 'S'-shape form in plan view and is plano-convex in section. The fitting is similar to those which take the form of a snake, for example ESS-E18BC0, but in this instance the terminals flair into knops rather than representations of a snake's head or tail. One terminal curves round to create an enclosed loop through which a strap is still attached. The strap comprises of a ribbon of copper alloy which has been riveted together. The ribbon has a len…

An incomplete, cast copper alloy mount probably Post Medieval to Modern in date. The precise function of the mount is unclear although it is possibly from a piece of furniture. In plan view the mount comprises of a central triangular-shaped plate with openwork decoration below. A complete silver decorative mount, possibly for a book cover or box, of probable modern date, post 1750. The mount is made from sheet silver. It has an irregular shape in plan view, possibly representing two superimposed capital letters. Due to the highly stylized openwork design of the mount, it is uncertain if the design represents an 'H', 'E', 'I' or 'U' possibly referring to the owner's initials. The front of the mount is decorated with an engraved linear design. The design includes thicker, deeper lines, usually in groups of three, which follow the shape of the mount. The…
