A cast lead alloy trade weight, of uncertain date but probably from the Medieval to Post Medieval periods, circa 1250 - 1700. The weight is sub-square in plan view with rounded corners and trapezoidal in section. The reverse of the weight is flat and undecorated with some surface wear. The sides of the weight slope inwards to a flat, sub-square face with a mounded, raised, central cross creating four recessed fields of roughly equal size. Object type: THIMBLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Thurrock
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy thimble of late Post Medieval date, circa 1650 - 1800AD. At first glance this would appear to be an open topped thimble. However, the uneven top edge of the thimble suggests that this is a closed thimble with the top missing due to old damage. The base rim is ragged and misshaped. The base is slightly squashed and is sub-oval in plan view. The sides of the thimble taper towards the top. The top edge of the thimble is cracked and squashed to one side, making it D-shaped in plan view. The maximum diameter of the top of the thimble is 16.97mm. The surface of the thimb…

A complete cast copper alloy Post Medieval thimble, circa 1550-1700 AD. The flat-topped thimble has two dents to the rim but is otherwise in fair condition. There is a plain band above the rim, approximately 4.0mm wide, with six rows of triangular indentations reaching the flat top of the thimble. The top of the thimble is abraded but three to four rows of the same triangular indentations appear to spiral out from the centre. The diameter of the top of the thimble is approximately 13.2mm. The surface of the thimble has green / brown corrosion. The length of the thimble is 18.12mm. The…

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Thurrock
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy sub-rectangular strap plate, incomplete as a result of old damage. The strap plate is probably Medieval, but could possibly date to the early Post Medieval period. The body of the strap plate is rectangular in plan view with two decorative edges. One of the decorative edges is damaged. There would have originally been a circular perforation to each corner of the strap plate. Only two perforations survive. It is uncertain whether the perforations were originally rivet holes or openwork decoration, as the remains of two internally cast spikes are present on the rever…
