Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A worked / knapped flint side and end scraper of Neolithic date, 2350 - 800BC. The scraper has retouch which cuts through the patination indicating that it was re-used at a later date, possibly in the Early Bronze Age period. The flint is sub oval in plan and irregular in section. The scraper was probably formed from debitage. Cortex is present indicating that the flint is from the secondary phase of working of the core. Patination is present on the majority of the surface in a light white / grey colour. Later retouch which cuts through the patination reveals flint which is mid grey i…

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A knapped, struck flint flake probably dating from the Late Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age periods, circa 3500BC - 1500BC. This is a tertiary flake as no cortex survives. In plan, the flake is sub oval with one straight edge. The section is roughly lentoid. The flint is fine grained, with a an uneven light brown / light blue-grey patina. The surfaces of the flint are shiny. The ventral surface is smooth with a bulb of percussion and concoidal ripples clearly visible. The dorsal face has 1 central ridge. The distal end terminates in a feathered fracture.
The flake measur…

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A knapped / worked flint flake probably dating from the Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age periods, circa 3500BC-1500BC. The flake has been reworked from a piece of tertiary debitage. In plan, the top of the flake has a broadly straight edge, and roughly parallel sides which meet at a central, rounded point. The section is sub-triangular. The flint is fine-grained, with an uneven light grey / blue patination. The surfaces of the flint are shiny. The ventral surface is smooth with visible concoidal ripples. The bulb of percussion is very shallow indicating the use of a soft hammer. The…

A knapped / struck flint flake probably dating from the Late Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age periods, circa 3500BC-1500BC. The flake has been reworked from a piece of tertiary debitage. In plan, the flake is sub-rectangular, with rounded corners at the distal end. The section is sub-trapezoidal. The flint is medium grained, with a light grey / yellow patina with flecks of dark grey. The surfaces of the flint are matte. The ventral surface is smooth. A bulb of percussion is present but concoidal ripples are not discernible. The dorsal surface has 3 main facets with no evidenc…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Worcestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A tertiary worked flint probably dating to the late Neolithic period, circa 2700-2350BC. Identified by Peter Reavil as a thumbnail / side-end scraper formed from the snapped end of a long blade. The scraper is complete. The dorsal and ventral sides of the scraper are light, milky grey in colour. An opaque, white patinated surface survives which was probably exposed while the rest of the flint remained below soil. The dorsal side of the scraper has been heavily re-worked in multiple directions with some conchoidal ripple marks clearly visible. Evidence of scaled and sub-parallel retouc…
