Object type: BUTTON
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worn and incomplete probable Medieval tin-alloy button of c. 13th - 14th century date. The button is circular in plan and convex in section and appears to be cast solidly from a tin-alloy. At the base of the head is a small linear slot, which would have held a separate looped shank, possibly of copper-alloy. This artefact appears highly polished in a silver colour, and two similar examples are illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991: 275, nos. 1386 and 1388) which are dated to c. AD 1230-1260 and c. AD 1270-1350 respectively, with another very similar example on this database as HAMP…

County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worn and broken probable Medieval tin-alloy button with copper-alloy shank of 13th - 14th century date. The button would have originally been circular in plan, but because it has suffered moderate losses to the upper portion and side of the head it now appears hemispherical in plan; it is convex in section and cast solidly from a tin-alloy. Embedded within the head is a fine circular in section wire of copper-alloy which forms the separate looped shank. This artefact appears highly polished in a silver colour, and two similar examples are illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991: 275…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a worn and corroded cast copper-alloy possible mount of possible Medieval date. The fragment is sub-oval in form and has very worn and abraded irregular edges; is slightly convex in profile, with the underside exhibiting slight concavity. On the upper surface of this fragment are a series of cross-hatched incised lines, and the remains of one complete and two partially formed circular apertures in a triangular formation. These two partial apertures are not visible on the underside, which may suggest that this fragment was a trial or error piece that was possibly not fini…

The mount is hemispherical in section with a slight concavity to the underside, and at the reverse are two integrally cast circular in section lugs, one of which is complete but bent towards the other broken lug. The decoration on the upper surface of the mount is delineated by three short horizo…

An incomplete, worn and corroded cast copper-alloy strap slide loop of Medieval date (c. AD 1250-1400). This artefact is trapezoidal in plan and flat in section, with the outer decorated surface convex in section. This surface is marked by a series of grooves which have created five horizontal ridges. At the opposing end of the slide, a small central aperture is retained which would have once held a separate internal rivet and rove, though this element is now missing. This artefact has a dark green corrosion colour, with areas of white, and can be paralleled by SUR-009A37 on this data…

The buckle is formed of two asymmetrical loops, with one trapezoidal in plan and the other 'D' shaped. The frame is concave in section, with steep internal bevelling and gradual bevelling at the exterior edge; the pin bar is rectangular in section. At the exterior edge of the 'D' shaped loop, the frame is expanded internally in an oval form to hold a notch for the pin. The underside of this artefact is flat, whilst both uppe…

This artefact is formed of a single complete loop with an oval aperture, with the frame oval in section; the pin bar is sub-rectangular in section, with slightly bevelled edges. From the head of each stud extends a single square in section shaft, which tapers through the length to a blunted point. A worn and corroded fragment of a late Roman cast copper-alloy bracelet dating to c. AD 250-410. The fragment exhibits moderate curvature but has broken short of the intended length at both ends. This fragment is broadly oval in section, although a narrow portion of the internal surface is flattened and might once have suggested a 'D' shaped section prior to the action of wear and corrosion on the bracelet. The outer surface of the bracelet has been decorated with a series of continuous transverse grooves resulting in a ridged appearance. This artefact has a light to mid green colour,…

In the centre of the mount, below the suspension loop are two raised elliptical forms which extend horizontally (total width of 33.5mm). The bell is incomplete as the clapper is missing and the area around the opening is uneven, thus suggesting a further continuation of the body. This bell is pyramidal in form and square in plan. At the apex of the pyramidal body is an integrally cast sub-lozenical suspension loop (measuring 15.8mm in length, 18.4mm in width and 5.3mm thick) which is pierced by a circular aperture (7.3mm in diameter). The weight is circular in plan and conical in form, with a circular suspension loop of iron extending from the flattened apex (15.5mm in length, 13.1mm in diameter); the aperture of the loop has been concealed by extensive corrosion product. The iron that forms this loop also appears to extend through the entire body of the weight, as traces of red brown corrosion are visible at the point of the conical form. This artefact has corroded to a white colour overall and weighs 30.91 grams.
