Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Medieval or Post Medieval uni-face cast lead alloy token. Powell Type 9. The token is discoidal and has a raised geometric lined grid design with pellets in the interstices on one face. Lead tokens had a wide variety of uses and were easy to manufacture; they are therefore difficult to date precisely outside of secure archaeological contexts. Those with simplistic designs seem to have been circulated for a long period of time and are given a date of c. 1250-1800 AD for this reason. Measurements: Diameter: 17.15mm, thickness: 2.2mm and weight:3.7g.

A cast copper alloy double looped sub-annular buckle, with recessed narrowed strap bar. Some of the buckle plate remains but the pin is missing. This form of jetton closely imitates Edwardian silver pennies, but with nonsensical legends comprised of pellets, annulets and figures imitating letters. Similar jettons are i…
