Object type: BELL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A very corroded but complete post-medieval animal ('crotal') bell cast in copper alloy (c. 17th century AD). Unfortunately corrosion obscures any decoration on both halves; they do seem to be plain. The upper half has two sound holes c. 5.4mm in diameter; however one of the holes has been covered with corrosion product which has restricted the diameter. The two sound holes on the lower hemisphere that abut the central casting seam are of comparable size and are joined together by a slot; they are perpendicular to those on the upper half. This slot has suffered from heavy corrosion whi…

Object type: DRESS HOOK
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded and bent cast copper-alloy hooked tag dating to the post-medieval period. The attachment loop is rectangular, its aperture part of the openwork of the body. It emerges from the pair of confronted, moulded spirals that form the body. Below these is a transverse ridge and a projecting ridged collar at the junction of plate and hook. The hook below is complete but has been twisted where it recurves; this has caused the tip of the hook to sit to the left alongside the main body of the hook. The lower surface of the object is flat. The metal has corroded to a variable mid-green …

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete and highly corroded cast copper-alloy oval single-looped buckle frame, with possible zoomorphic features, of early-medieval to medieval date. The frame is sub-oval in section, and thicker at the outer edge. This tapers into a probable zoomorphic head, with a flattened oval ear, probable eye and an elongated snout from which the narrow strap bar extends. The lower end of this zoomorphic buckle tapers out in opposition to the snout and nose to give the appearance of curvature in the strap bar. Additionally, along the spine of the buckle is a raised linear feature. The buck…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete, corroded cast copper-alloy double-looped trapezoidal buckle of post-medieval date (17th century AD). The loops are trapezoidal in shape, with the outer edges of the frame are angled to create an outward facing triangular point at each end. On one of these points it is possible to see a trace of gilt below the corrosion. In the centre of the other triangular protrusion is a corroded mass of iron; this is representative of a now absent iron pin, the tip of which having fused. The buckle has a narrow central pin bar which terminates in two rounded knops that protrude beyon…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete corroded, worn and bent cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle with an angled frame of post-medieval date. The loops are broadly oval in shape, while the outer edges of the frame are angled to create a triangular point on either side; these have no clear decoration but are reminiscent of the moulded rosettes found on similar buckles. The object has a narrow central pin bar which terminates in two knops that protrude slightly beyond the exterior of the buckle. At one end of this bar is an area of iron corrosion, which is suggestive of a now absent iron pin. The sides of t…
