Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead steelyard weight possibly of Roman date The lead weight is of biconical form and has lost the iron suspension loop or loops (with a surviving length of 32.3mm). The iron wire protrudes from the base of the weight and indicates the weight may have had a loop either side. The weight is widest around its midsection (with a diameter of 25.2mm) and is undecorated. The weight has few diagnostic features and weighs 54.6g which closely corresponds to one sixth of a libra (Roman pound) or a two drachma weight (54.58 g), although a 54.6g weight is also consistent with a modern 2 ounce …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead steelyard weight of uncertain date The lead weight is of irregular biconical form and is complete with a copper alloy suspension loop at both ends (with a length of 36.0mm and internal loop diameters of 4 - 5mm). One of the end loops contains iron corrosion. The weight is widest around its midsection (with a maximum diameter of 22.6mm) and is undecorated. The weight has few diagnostic features and weighs 35.0g which does not closely correspond to Roman period weighing systems. 35.0 grams roughly equates to a 1ΒΌ ounce weight in both modern (1.235oz) and medieval Avoirdupois s…

Medieval lead pilgrim's ampulla of 14th to 16th century date The ampulla is near complete, missing the side loops and part of the mouth (with a length of 57.5mm and a weight of 67.8g). The mouth is expanded (with a width of 30.9mm) and is closed. The sides of the neck are straight and converge to the body. Both suspension loops have been lost but the upper remnants survive on one side (and would have had a length of approximately 18mm). The obverse face was rounded and domed but has been partially closed with a central, longitudinal dent (the body has a diameter of 37.6mm and a maxi…

Medieval lead seal matrix, probably of 13th or 14th century date The seal matrix is circular (with a diameter of 29.3mm and a weight of 15.2g) and has lost the loop on the rear (with a surviving depth of 5.9mm). The rear is flat with lugs at the apex and base. The larger lug at the apex is likely to have been perforated for the loop. The seal die has a simple eight-pointed star for the central device. The encircling legend is damaged and worn but appears to be a personal legend, reading: * S' DAVI AP ADAM Seal of David son of Adam

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Gloucestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead pan weight of uncertain date, possibly medieval The weight is sub-circular (with a diameter of 31.9mm - 33.3mm) and of rectangular section (with a thickness of 8.2mm). There is the suggestion of a lip around the top face but no decoration is discernible on the weight. The weight weighs 58.2g which equates to 2.053ounces. The weight closely corresponds to a 2 ounce weight (allowing for slight corrosion) of the medieval mercantile system (in use pre-1300) and the Tower System in use from 1250 both of which equate to 1.993 ounces.

Post medieval lead shot, probably of 17th century date The spherical shot has a diameter of 32.5 - 33.2mm (1.3inches) and has a weight of 192.0g (0.42lb), approximating to a half-pound shot. There is a flattened facet on the shot, suggesting the shot has impacted on a hard object. The size and weight of the shot would suggest it used with the Base gun, which were in use during the mid 17th and early 18th centuries.

Copper / lead alloy fitting of uncertain date The fitting appears to be complete or near complete (with a length of 20.1mm, a width of 18.8mm, a thickness of 7.3mm and a weight of 6.6g). The fitting is slightly convex across its width and the sides are straight and near-parallel. The face is ribbed and probably formed three central circular holes, only one of which survives (of 4.5mm diameter). The rear is flat and has two stubs on one side, possibly the remnants of loop.
