Roman copper alloy bow brooch of T-shaped type, dating to the 1st or 2nd century AD
The brooch is fragmentary and is represented by the head only (with a surviving length of 21.9mm and a weight of 7.8g). The hinged-pin is secured within tubular wings (with a width of 24.8mm). The wing diameters narrow towards their terminals (where they have a diameter of 5.3mm). Iron corrosion adhering to the head suggests that an iron axis bar was employed. The ampulla is near complete, missing the side loops and part of the mouth (with a length of 57.5mm and a weight of 67.8g). The mouth is expanded (with a width of 30.9mm) and is closed. The sides of the neck are straight and converge to the body. Both suspension loops have been lost but the upper remnants survive on one side (and would have had a length of approximately 18mm). The implement is made on yellow-brown cortical flint and is unpatinated. The flake is retouched along the distal end, with comparatively steep retouch, suggesting a scraper edge. The flake has also been notched on one side of the striking platform.
