Fragment of decorative copper alloy plate, probably a fragment of a Roman plate brooch, probably of 2nd century AD date
The brooch is represented by a sub-triangular fragment of the edge to near the centre (with a surviving length of 13.5mm, a surviving width of 12.1mm, a thickness of 1.6mm and a weight of 0.8g). The outside edge is circular (suggesting an original diameter of approximately 40mm) and the interior appears to have had three concentric raised borders. Medieval copper alloy annular brooch of 13th or 14th century
The brooch is fragmentary, represented by approximately half of the original (with a surviving width of 23.1mm and a weight of 8.2g). The frame was open and of annular type (with a diameter of 44mm). The outside edge of the frame was octagonal with gently concave sides. The interior of the frame was circular (24mm diameter).
