Possible awl. The 'business end' or distal end of the awl is missing. Almost all of the ventral face, both edges and distal end, has been invasively retouched apart from a central section. The proximal end has been heavily retouched, like 'crushing', which may have been used as the hand held part of the tool. On the dorsal face, flakes have been removed diagonally across the length of the piece, possibly to thin it. There is a small amount of cortex on the right margin near the distal end. The left margin has invasive retouch near the proximal end. The flint if grey/ brown nodular fli…

Object type: BACKED BLADE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Possible backed blade made on a fragment of a earlier larger tool (probably Neolithic). The ventral face has been invasively retouched along the left margin which cuts into the left margin of the proximal end. There is a small notch in the centre of the right margin. Retouch on the left margin works onto the distal end giving a convexed edge. On the dorsal face, the area that has not been retouched has a polished surface. This occurred when the flint was used as an earlier tool. The left margin forms the distal end of the old tool. It has subsequently been retouched along the steep fa…

Broken triangular arrowhead. Sub triangular in plan and lozenge-shaped in section. The edges taper in towards the proximal end, possibly as an aid for hafting. The ventral face has a heavily retouched of 'crushed' distal end. The piece has been thinned by flakes removed from the distal end and left lateral edge. There has been large flake removals and 'crushing' on the right lateral edge. On the dorsal face, a large thinning flake has been removed running from the proximal to distal end. A large flake has been removed on the left lateral edge with a hinged fracture, possibly as an att…

Awl with backed blade. The ventral face contains minor 'nibbling' along the length of the right lateral edge. The distal end has been invasively retouched. On the dorsal face the right margin has been snapped along its entire length to give natural backing for the blade on the opposite lateral edge. The left margin has been invasively retouched with subsequent 'nibbling' along its length. The distal end has been semi abruptly retouched to give a concaved edge which ends with a point on the left margin. The flint is dark grey with white fleks. Butler (2005) illustrates a similar exam…

Borer or 'Spurred Piece'. It has a kite shaped plan and a sub triangular section. The ventral face has been invasively retouched on the left margin, running up from the proximal end. The edge parallel to this has also been retouched. There is a notch on the left margin at a 90 degree angle to the lower worked edge. The right margin, near the proximal end, contains a spur. Flakes have been removed from the distal end of the dorsal face. A spur has been made in the left margin near the proximal end by two notches. A thinning flake has been removed from the dorsal face, which was struck …

Single platform core. The base of the core has been removed however it is not know if this happened before, during or after the core was used. Bladelets and blades have been removed with parallel edges. The platform has an irregular edge and shows evidence of platform preparation. The core is unifacially flaked with pebble cortex on the reverse of the worked face. The flint is light grey with white fleks and cream inclusions. Mercer (1981) illustrates a similar example on page 121, Fig. 52, L25 which dates to the Neolithic period.

Awl. It is possible that the awl has been made on a oblique arrowhead. It is sub triangular in plan and D shaped in section. On the ventral face flakes have been removed from the left margin to thin the piece. There is minor retouch near the distal end which has been snapped into a point. The proximal end has also been snapped and a notch inter cuts the left margin. This has been made by a single blow and may possibly be a broken tang. There is semi abrupt retouch on the left margin of the dorsal face, which creates a convexed edge. The right edge has been abruptly retouched. Keene …
