Object type: HAIR PIN
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A bent and incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman hair pin of the curved units between cordon head type (Cool 1990, 154; ref. Group 3). This belongs to her sub-group B as the finial-shaped knop head has cast cordons: two pairs above and below a cylindrical element. It has a long circular-sectioned shank which is at a right angle, having also been bent slightly below the head. It has been truncated before the tip. The pin is patinated a variable mid-green colour with some blemishes. The treatment of the head is very similar to an illustrated example (ibid., 153; ref. 5).

Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded and abraded cast lead object with a broken iron prong at one apex - a Roman steelyard weight. The object is broadly biconical in shape, as typical Roman steelyard weights were (Geake 2001, 67), with a broken iron loop at the apex for suspension. At 93.51g this steelyard weight does not readily fit Roman standards

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of post-medieval date. It is formed of a pair of oval loops which are externally bevelled on the upper surface. The bevelling is echoed on the lower surface internally. The loops are not quite symmetrical. The pin bar has a trapezoidal cross-section; the pin is missing. The upper surface is decorated with a moulded vine scroll ornament cast within a sunken field. There is a design of perhaps a floral type at the centre of each outer edge. Similar buckles can be found illustrated in Whitehead (1996, 68) where they are dated to the period 1…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment possibly from a cast copper-alloy axehead of Bronze Age date. The fragment consists of the lower blade and includes an abraded, expanded cutting edge. The axehead has been broken approximately 11mm from the cutting edge which is distorted (bent); the 'cutting edge' is also notably blunt. At the break the object has a flattened oval cross-section. The object is highly corroded and is largely a light, dusty green colour, but with some blackened areas. There are transverse file marks on both surfaces.

A shield-shaped cast lead probable trade weight of probable late medieval date. The edges of the weight are bevelled, and there is a slight ledge at the base. On the upper surface the weight bears lettering moulded in low relief. It would seem to read 'V C? // R D'' (all retrograde and read backwards). There is damage to top corner edge which is bent forward and abraded. The reverse is generally flat and undecorated. The weight weighs 60.55g, slightly above the 57g noted by Biggs and Withers (2000, 34-35) as a cluster point for masses of shield-shaped weights, consistent with a subdivi…

A corroded double-sided copper-alloy square coin weight of post-medieval date. The weight is for an angel - an 11 shilling coin of James I during the period of his second coinage (1604-1619 AD; Withers and Withers 1995, 13). The lower surface is unclear. At 69.4 grains this weight is close to the 77 grains required for this denomination which probably represents corrosion loss. On the top left corner of the obverse is a probable stamped mark, which may have distorted the side above; the mark is unclear. Obverse descript.: Crowned 'XIs'; unclear stamp above Reverse descript.: Ind…

Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A rim fragment from a cast copper-alloy vessel, now a crude quadrilateral in form. The rim is very slightly widened and bevelled. A carbon residue survives on the outer face and may suggest a cooking vessel. The internal surface is smooth with a dark-green patina. At the edge opposite the rim the side begins to turn outwards before an old break. There is a longitudinal ridge on the exterior. Insufficient of the vessel survives to suggest the vessel form or size. As such a wide late medieval to post-medieval date is suggested. The fragment now has a dark grey-green patina.

At the opposite end is a curved hook (3.7mm wide). Below this the main body of the clasp is 10.65mm in width, at the beginning of a double cusped element, narrowing beyond to 8.0mm, finally flaring to a maximum of 13.2mm at the damaged attachment end. Object type: PURSE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded cast copper-alloy fragment from a pendent frame of a late medieval or early post-medieval purse. The object is V-shaped in cross section and slightly curved in profile. On the outer side there are traces of incised diagonal double grooves decorating the frame in a series of 'V'/'X's: these appear to feature traces of niello. The section of the artefact together with the absence of any inscription suggests that this was part of the frame from a Ward-Perkins (1940, 164) Type A1 purse. For similar examples see Read (2001, 130; refs. 907-909). The fragment has corroded to a red…

A cast copper-alloy drop handle of late 17th to early 18th century date, probably from a drawer. The attachment loop is trapezoidal in form but is broken and bent upwards and forwards. The handle expands from the loop in a sub-circular loop in plan, semicircular in cross-section, with a flat lower surface. The upper surface is decorated with moulded fleur-de-lis ornaments at the cardinal points; the lowermost is the most developed and protrudes the furthest. Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded but complete medieval copper-alloy annular buckle (c. 14th century AD). The frame consists of a ring of circular section measuring 34.9 diameter by 4.6 mm thick. The cast pin has a bevelled upper surface and a flat lower surface which features file marks. There is a transverse ridge at its junction with the loop. The pin is simply looped around the frame; there is no pin rest. The artefact has therefore been recorded as a buckle rather than a brooch (see Egan and Pritchard 1991, 57). Many examples of annular buckles have been found in London in 14th-century contexts (ibi…
