A medieval silver coin: a penny of Edward III (1327-77), Pre-treaty period, Durham mint. It is 18.2mm in diameter and 0.7mm thick. It weighs1.15gm. The quality of the obverse die used for this coin appears to be very poor: the lettering is of different sizes and staggered, the king's head is tilted to the right, and there are broken annulets above each shoulder of the bust and at the end of the legend. This perhaps indicates a coin of series F as a crude local die is known to have been used at Durham for this series of coins. For reference, see North, volume 1, number 1177.
