Object type: SHOT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Leeds
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast lead ball shot of post-Medieval date, about AD 1600 - 1900. There is no casting seam or casting sprue visible. However there are a number of small indentations filled with brown concretion, making the surface dimpled. The shot is sub-sphericla and may have been distorted by impact into a soft material. It is 12.6mm in diameter and weighs 10.9g. The weight suggests that it was intended for use in a small pistol. However excavated shot will have lost mass while in the ground making positive attribution to a specific calibre and positive dating difficult.

Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Leeds
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast lead spindle whorl, of Walton Rogers form A1, of probable Early Medieval date, about AD 850 - 1000. It is plano-convex in form, flat on one face and domed on the other, making it D shaped in cross-section. There is a central, circular perforation of 10mm internal diameter, but no other markings. The whorl has a dark grey patina. It is 36.3mm in diameter and 16.8mm high. It weighs 99.1g.
Walton Rogers suggests that form A1 whorls were used from AD 500 - 1000, but that those with a central perforation of over 9mm are likely to be late Saxon onwards.
