A fragment of cast lead alloy openwork Medieval tracery, probably dating to c. 14th-15th century AD. The fragment consists of a relatively flat openwork design, with a solid horizontal bar positioned presumably at its upper edge and a sub-triangular open work section below with four remaining vertical columns of varying height joined at the bottom by a triangular segment with a circular knop at its apex. The upper horizontal bar is decorated with repeating raised squares filled with alternating large central pellet in one, followed by pelleted saltires in the next. Below this, the two…

Silver whistle, incomplete. A piece of sheet silver has been rolled and soldered along the edges to create a cylinder that tapers slightly and is broken at both ends. There are two collars with three ridges, one at either end of the body. In the centre, soldered onto the body between the two collars, is a silver wire suspension loop and that secures a free-running wire loop. In addition to this, independent from the body, is a silver wire loop soldered at each end to make a loop, with an S-shaped silver wire attached through it.

Three medium-grained sandstone whetstones of probable Medieval to post-Medieval date. All three whetstones seem to be composed of different forms of sandstone, and may possibly be Tertiary stones from Hampshire. The longest and narrowest whetstone (far right in photo) is rectangular in section and measures 76.23 mm long, 21.59 mm wide (at base), and 16.75 mm thick; it weighs 31.01 grams. The second whetstone (middle in photo) is sub-triangular in section and measures 66.70 mm long, 21.60 mm wide, and 25.96 mm thick; it weighs 83.96 grams. The third whetstone is probably a fragment (far…

A probable cast lead alloy weight, dating to the Medieval to Post Medieval period. The object is nearly a quarter of a circle with two flat faces and a raised linear design on one face, perhaps indicating a cross which is common in circular weights (cf. Biggs and Withers 2000, nos. 26, 40). It is 20.67 mm long, 15.61 mm wide, 6.36 mm thick, and weighs 12.57 g. It seems that this portion was probably cut from the whole circle, and the remaining linear design almost bisects the quarter in half. The perimeter of the weight is rounded. The 'cut' surfaces seem to be contemporary to th…

A complete copper alloy trade weight, dating to the Victorian period (Modern, 1837-1901 AD). This particular trade weight was verified in London, as notated by the stamp depicting the shield of St. George and the Ewer, but the portcullis circle mark indicates that this weight was made or sold in Westminster, which was a part of London outside of the jurisdiction of the Founders Company (Biggs1992, 54). The weight was then stamped with SUSSEX and a wide crown in the centre when it was distributed to the region. This particular example currently weighs 6.39 grams; weights of an ounce or…

A large lead alloy conical weight with iron suspension shaft running through it, probably dating from the Roman or Medieval periods. The weight has a rounded convex base rather than a flattened circular base as is usual; the iron shaft is bent over onto the base's surface and flattened into place. The upper portion of the conical weight has broken off including a suspension loop or similar element. Lead alloy weights were easy to manufacture and similar types were used throughout a large period of time; they are therefore difficult to date out of secure archaeological contexts …

The cup weight is dish-shaped with a flat base measuring approximately 21.3 mm in diameter with 14.22 mm high walls angled slightly outwards from the base and a 28.79 mm external diameter (23.65 mm internal upper diameter). The cup has a flat rim, which is undecorated unlike other examples recorded onto the PAS database (cf: HAMP-26B881, DENO-54E403). A cast lead-alloy conical weight of uncertain date, probably dating from the Roman-Post Medieval periods. The weight is conical, with a small raised ring around the central hole, which penetrates through the centre of the weight vertically. The base has a deep groove running from the circumference of the weight to the central hole, possibly having to do with the central suspension loop, now missing. The weight is greyish white in colour. Lead alloy weights had a variety of uses throughout a large span of time and were relatively easy to manufacture; they are therefore difficult to …

The weight has a flat octagonal bottom, smooth sides and a flattened suspension loop at its apex, which is rectangular in cross-section, with a transverse circular hole pierced through it. A V-shaped groove is visible on the underside of the base and is only a 3-4 mm deep within the standing weight. The weight measures approximately 53 mm high, 31.7-32.8 mm wide at base and weighs 239 grams. The metal is of a dark grey colour and patina. Because standing weights of this type were easy…

A cast lead alloy standing weight sub-conical in plan with a flat circular upper surface and lightly facetted edges of uncertain number. The weight has a flat oval bottom which narrows into a conical shape, which seems to have been shaped by shaping the sides with shallow facets; the upper surface has been flattened without a suspension loop and there are a series of irregularly positioned seven circular indentations, perhaps indicating the turning of the object during shaping. The weight is square in plan, with a domed upper surface and a flat base, resulting in a sub-trapezoidal cross-section. The upper surface is decorated with a large raised long cross with three edges of the cross remaining; the three ends represent different types of cross, one being pattee, one pommee and one undetermined with a large angular knop at the end. A cast lead-alloy conical standing weight of uncertain date. The weight is conical in form, with a slightly concave base; it is hollow and narrows towards the top where it is damaged possibly where there may have been a vertical suspension element. Standing weights of this type were easy to make and used throughout a large period of time. Biconical steelyard weights are common in the Roman period and although this is conical rather than biconical it has been found in direct association with a large quantity of finds from the Roman period. Therefore, it is possible that this weig…

An extremely damaged conical standing weight of uncertain usage and date, probably Roman to Post Medieval in date. The conical weight is damaged with scoring on its outer face, possibly from in situ damage; the base is hollow approximately 10 mm up the inside of the weight, with an asymmetrically-positioned cylindrical hole also going only partway up the inside of the weight. It is unclear what this cylindrical hole would have been used for and as the weight does not have a central iron shaft running throught it, the weight's usage is unclear. A lead alloy steelyard weight probably dating to the Roman period (c. AD 43-410). The weight consists of a conical lead alloy body with the remains of a separately cast iron suspension loop running vertically through the centre, now missing its loop. The weight is in very poor condition with a crumbling surface and a large degree of iron corrosion and staining on the lead alloy surface. It measures roughly 45 mm in diameter at base, 23 mm high and weighs 171 grams. Numerous examples have been recorded on the PAS database; cf: SF-FB8D63 and WILT-8442F7. Because lead weights are eas…

A cast lead alloy conical standing weight of uncertain (Roman to post-Medieval) date (c. 43-c. 1800). The weight has a circular base with significant damage around its circumference, as well as around the central vertical shaft which is now empty. It is possible that this weight originally had a central suspension loop, but no trace of iron corrosion remains to suggest that this was so. The external surface is not smooth, as is usually the case, but marked with scratches, lumps and damage, suggesting that this was cast quickly and without much care. There are pointed pieces of the wei…

An incomplete cast lead alloy conical hanging weight, probably of Roman date, c. AD 43-410. The weight is missing its upper end with suspension element, exposing a hollow conical weight body and the base of an iron shaft, which would have run through the vertical centre of the weight. The base of the weight is rounded and would not have been used for resting the weight as in standing weights. The remains of the weight measure 61.93 mm high, 32.62 mm wide (at base), 29.08 mm thick (at base); it weighs 193 grams.
