Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of an unidentified object of unknown period, possibly modern. The object consists of a horn-shaped hollow cast segment of either tin, tin alloy or perhaps a thin sheet of lead alloy, with a resin-like material filling the inside of its hooked form. The moulded decoration on the outside of the object is formed of three consecutive tiers following the overall curved shape of the fragment. The style of the decoration seems to be similar to items in the Art Deco style of the early 20th century; however, this could be a coincidence. The metal is dark grey to chalky white in …

Object type: RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy coiled object of unknown date. It is possible that this object is a derivative form of a Roman coiled snake ring (c. 43-410); however, its style is unlike common snake ring types and as such calls its potential association with these items into doubt. The object consists of a coiled cast copper alloy strip. The wider end of the coiled band is formed with a simplistic triangular or arrow-shaped 'head' which tapers into a thinner neck, wider body, and ends with a thin narrow point. Due to the high level of corrosion on the metal surface, it is impossible to dist…

Three medium-grained sandstone whetstones of probable Medieval to post-Medieval date. All three whetstones seem to be composed of different forms of sandstone, and may possibly be Tertiary stones from Hampshire. The longest and narrowest whetstone (far right in photo) is rectangular in section and measures 76.23 mm long, 21.59 mm wide (at base), and 16.75 mm thick; it weighs 31.01 grams. The second whetstone (middle in photo) is sub-triangular in section and measures 66.70 mm long, 21.60 mm wide, and 25.96 mm thick; it weighs 83.96 grams. The third whetstone is probably a fragment (far…

A cast copper-alloy object, possibly Medieval or post-Medieval in date and possibly representing part of a stirrup or harness fitting. The object consists of a U-shaped band which is thickest at the turn of the curve, with ridged decoration to give the appearance of swagged drapery. At one end of the band the object widens to an integral circular suspension loop approximately 9.8mm in diameter, with a hole 7.5mm in diameter. At the other end of the curve there is a knop in the form of a flower head, measuring 12.8mm across and comprising a central circular pellet surrounded by eigh…

Object type: BEAD
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete cast copper alloy annular bead of uncertain date. The bead is pierced with an off-centre hole, approximately 5 mm in diameter, and D-shaped in cross section. The grey-green colour of the metal suggestions that the bead has a relatively high tin content. It measures 12.55 mm in diameter, 4.66 mm thick and weighs 2.88 grams. This particular bead has been found with a wealth of objects dating to the Roman period (c. 43-410 AD) and it is likely that this object dates to the Roman period. However, as these types of beads have been manufactured from the Bronze Age to the Post M…

A nearly complete iron knife blade and tang, probably dating to either the Roman or Medieval periods (c. 1st-4th c; c. 11th-15th century AD). The knife consists of a blade which is sub-triangular in plan, with a nearly straight back and slightly curved edge; the tang tapers, is square-shaped in section and is positioned on the midline of the blade. A portion of the tang seems to have broken off at the end, and the tip of the blade has been bent backwards onto itself. The iron surface is intact, but highly corroded, with some slivers sheering off easily. The knife measures 129 mm long;…

An incomplete unidentified cast copper alloy object, probably dating to between the Roman and Post Medieval periods (c. 43-1700 AD). The object consists of a broken fragment of a circular suspension loop, followed by a small raised moulded square and progressing into a long thin strip which widens slightly as it progresses away from the suspension loop towards its flat-edged end. The flat end does not seem to be broken at all, although this could be due to smoothing of the break surface during deposition. The item ranges from a flat cross-section at loop to D-shaped section to thin D…

The ring constists of a circular interior ring with an outer decoration of a possibly zoomorphic head and an inscription plaque. The ring is decorated elaborately with a zoomorphic head bearing eyes, snout, and mouth, as well as possible ears. This decoration is fixed to the sub-triangular-sectioned ring band by means of a rectangular-sectioned neck with four decorative grooves on the top. A corroded medieval to post-medieval cast copper-alloy object of unknown purpose. The overall shape in plan is axe or chisel-like, whereby from a sub-rectangular section at one end it tapers in thickness and curves inwardly at both sides, then flares back out towards the thin end. The non-flared end is the thickest point and terminates in an old break. Its possible use as a Bronze Age tool such as a chisel has been examined by Dr Ben Roberts the curator for Bronze Age objects at the British Museum, and discounted. A struck coin of uncertain date and attribution, probably of prehistoric date. The coin has been struck on a relatively thick blank, similar to those typical of the Iron Age and the circumferential edge of the coin has spread similar to those of the British Iron Age. The metallic composition of the coin is uncertain, but it seems that it is copper alloy in spite of the metallic colour being a very dark greyish-black.
