A Medieval silver long cross penny of Edward I, probably dating from AD 1305-1310. Probably North Class 10cf. Mint of London. Cf. North 1991 Vol II, p. 32, nos. 1040-1043. A more general type is suggested for this coin as both surfaces of the coin are severely worn, therefore obscuring important diagnostic detail. The coin has also been bent slightly, creating damage near to the centre of the coin.

Object type: AXEHEAD ROUGHOUT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete axehead roughout/preform of Neolithic date (c. 4000-2500 BC). The axehead has been manufactured on medium grey coloured flint with large white inclusions, which has now patinated to an olive green colour which in places is extremely dark. On one face of the roughout, two concavities are visible where cortex has been preserved, as well as a smaller patch on the other face. The piece has been intensively worked and thus the original nature of the support type is unclear. Most of both faces are covered with negative flake scars from initial hard hammer percussion which has ser…

An incomplete axe roughout/preform dating to the Neolithic (c. 4000-2500 BC). The roughtout has been initiated on material which was originally grey in colour and containing large grey inclusions, but has now been stained an olive green with darker patches. Approximately 3/4 of the roughout remains, with the bottom quarter probably having been lost during manufacture. A single flake resulting from modern edge damage has been detached from the tip-end of the axe, which shows the original grey colour of the raw material. The broken end of the axe demonstrates a negative hinge fracture, …

A struck flint retouched flake of prehistoric date (c. 8000-1500 BC). The flake has been struck from a core of blackish brown flint and remains unpatinated. In section, it is triangular. Approximately 2/3 of the flake survives, with the distal end missing. The surviving part of the flake terminates in a step fracture. At the proximal end, a small amount of cortex is visible, which covers approximately 1/3 of the platform, which itself is plain and sub-triangular in shape. Two prominent dorsal arrises are visible on the dorsal surface, while on the ventral side a prominent bulb of perc…

A knapped flint barbed and tanged arrowhead of Early Bronze Age date (c. 2500-1500 BC). The arrowhead is a light grey in colour, with no patination visible and small white inclusions scattered throughout the flint. Only small patches of the original flake surface remain, though this example was probably manufactured on a tertiary soft hammer flake. The piece has been intensely pressure-flaked in order to thin and shape the piece. A small amount of the tip is missing, probably due to an impact, and some minimal lateral edge-damage is visible on one face, slightly below the tip. The tan…

An Iron Age gold stater, attributed to the Southern tribes of the Atrebates or Regini and dating from c. 60-50 BC. Cf.: ABC no. 485, of 'Selsey Two-face' type (Cottam 2010:47). The face of the coin with 'wreath' design is unclear and the other face depicting a triple-tailed horse right with wheel below and charioteer's arms above has been struck high, eliminating the upper portion of the design. However, the remaining detail suggests that this identification is correct. Where the coin has spread at its circumference it is possible that this has exposed that the coin is in fact …

An incomplete Medieval cast copper-alloy single loop oval buckle with ornate outer edges and narrowed and offset strap bar, c. AD 1250-1400. The buckle is missing its pin, but iron corrosion on the narrowed strap bar and on the outer edge where the pin end would have rested suggests it was composed of iron. The outer ornate edge consists of four lobed knops with two transverse ridges dividing the outer knops from the two knops in the centre and a thin groove dividing the two central knops. Cf.
