Approximately one-third of a very large cast copper-alloy Medieval vesica-shaped seal matrix, probably of ecclesiastical association, dating to the 14th century AD. The remains of the seal consist of the upper portion of the vesica face, including the upper portion of a possible fleur-de-lis, a decorated perimeter edge outside and inside the legend space and the remains of a portion of the legend reading: [S'R]OGERI: DE(C/G?)A(N/T?)[...]. The reverse is plain and undecorated, save for the circular suspension loop at the upper apex of the vesica and its subsequent raised vertical rib r…

A copper-alloy Medieval vesica-shaped seal matrix, probably of 14th century date. The seal is vesica in shape with a flat outer face and a reverse that is plain and undecorated save for a thin vertical rib with the remains of a circular suspension loop. The outer face is damaged and abraded, therefore discerning the legend and decoration is difficult. The central depiction seems to be of a 'pelican in its piety' feeding three chicks in a nest resting on a branch. The legend is nearly completely illegible but likely reads: [ECC]E P[E]LICAN[VS] ('Here is a pelican'). Unfortunately due t…

A cast copper-alloy Medieval seal matrix dating to the 14th century AD. The matrix is of pedestal type with a round face from which rises a slightly facetted handle. The top of the handle is broken at the bottom of the pierced lobed terminal. The seal itself seems to depict a large bird perched on a branch facing another attribute now illegible due to wear in this area; above the bird to the left is a crescent and star. The legend of the seal matrix is obscured by differential wear but it is possible to discern the following: S'IOh'nES: PERIS: D'[...]HEt (where the 't' is written as …

A fragment of a Medieval lead alloy seal matrix dating to the c. 14th century AD. The seal matrix would have been discoidal, but now only a small portion of the seal surface remains along with a portion of a raised vertical ridge on the reverse surface. The break is uneven and jagged, suggesting in situ damage. The remains of the inscription read, '+ S'(E?)[...]ANIV'. The central depiction seems to be a wheat sheaf or similar with additional decoration, now lost due to damage.

A copper-alloy Medieval seal matrix with 'Lamb of God' design, probaby of 14th century date. The matrix is of pedestal type with a round face from which rises a slightly facetted handle topped with a double collar above which is a pierced trilobed terminal. There is no obvious mark on the upper side of the handle to indicate where the legend begins on the matrix. The matrix face has a lamb lying down and looking upwards holding a cross standard with banner above its back within a pelleted border. The legend reads: ECCE AGNVS DEI = BEHOLD THE LAMB OF GOD. An incomplete cast copper alloy Post Medieval seal matrix with handle and suspension loops, dating to c. 17th century AD. The seal is oval in shape and bears the coat of arms of the Vintners Company, consisting of two tuns above a centrally positioned chevron and one below. The seal extends upwards in a conical fashion, ending in an elaborate quatrefoil handle, with four circular holes positioned in the petals; one of the holes seems to not have been punched through or finished. The uppermost petal of the quatrefoil has broken off, possibly from in situ damage. The seal matrix meas…

The seal is vesica-shaped, with a raised central decoration and outer legend, both of which are illegible due to severe surface wear. The reverse face has a large rectangular suspension lug with circular hole running parallel to the outer face. Beneath the suspension lug is a raised vertical line with further radiating lines, possibly meant to suggest a standing saint or angel; however, this is also illegible. A Medieval seal matrix dating to the 13th century, with inlaid Roman intaglio (agate/jasper/carnelian) possibly dating from the 2nd-3rd centuries AD. The seal matrix is currently in two pieces as a separate back plate has separated from the seal matrix. The inlaid intaglio seems to depict a nude hero or possibly Mars, facing left in attitude, with shield in left and upraised right hand. Inscription: S' hERICI (d?)E IOVINGETV' . This can presumably be translated from the Latin to read, 'The seal of Henry of Jevington'. A specialist report is forthcoming. Thickness below inclu…

A Medieval cast lead alloy seal matrix dating from the late 12th to mid-13th century AD. The seal is circular in plan and discoidal; it has been broken irregularly into two pieces, possibly from a post-discovery attempt to open the object up, which had been folded in situ. It has been decorated on the outer seal face with an indented octofoil, which is surrounded by the legend: SIG' M[A]TILDIS : DE : hOD[...]IA . A cast lead-alloy Medieval seal matrix, dating to the 13th century AD. The seal is vesica-shaped, with a raised central decoration which seems to depict an elaborate star, with a longer central line composed of an evergreen branch. A cast lead-alloy Medieval seal matrix, dating to the 13th century AD. The seal matrix is vesica shaped with traces of both a central decoration and surrounding legend. However, due to severe surface wear, the inscription and decoration is illegible; the latter may represent foliage. The legend reads: [...]A(R/N)E[...]. A cast lead Medieval seal matrix, c. 13th-14th century AD. The seal matrix is flat and circular in shape with what looks like the remains of a small suspension loop or tab on the reverse face, which is slightly dished. The obverse is incised with a legend which seems to read: S' ALICIEI . FIL'[IA] RIC', meaning that this is the seal of Alicia, daughter of Richard. The central design on the obverse is of an openwork cross, similar to those seen on other objects during this period. A Medieval cast lead alloy seal matrix, dating to c. 13th century AD. The seal is vesica-shaped and engraved around its perimeter with *S' PhILIPPI: hARDI (Seal of Philip Hardy). The central decoration is of four intersecting lines with trifurcated ends and a central pellet, arranged to create an eight-pointed star. Vague traces on the reverse surface of the seal suggests that it was also decorated with a raised design; although the design is now unclear, it is likely that it incorporated simple pellets and either a raised cross or figure, possibly a bird or angel.
