Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Approximately one-third of a very large cast copper-alloy Medieval vesica-shaped seal matrix, probably of ecclesiastical association, dating to the 14th century AD. The remains of the seal consist of the upper portion of the vesica face, including the upper portion of a possible fleur-de-lis, a decorated perimeter edge outside and inside the legend space and the remains of a portion of the legend reading: [S'R]OGERI: DE(C/G?)A(N/T?)[...]. The reverse is plain and undecorated, save for the circular suspension loop at the upper apex of the vesica and its subsequent raised vertical rib r…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy Medieval vesica-shaped seal matrix, probably of 14th century date. The seal is vesica in shape with a flat outer face and a reverse that is plain and undecorated save for a thin vertical rib with the remains of a circular suspension loop. The outer face is damaged and abraded, therefore discerning the legend and decoration is difficult. The central depiction seems to be of a 'pelican in its piety' feeding three chicks in a nest resting on a branch. The legend is nearly completely illegible but likely reads: [ECC]E P[E]LICAN[VS] ('Here is a pelican'). Unfortunately due t…

A heavily clipped Medieval silver long cross penny of later Edwardian issue, c. AD 1300-c. AD 1483. Mint unknown. The coin has lost its entire circumference with legends, however a fragment of 'EDW' and the bifoliate side-fleurs on the obverse crown suggest that this is likely to be a penny of Edward II or later (North Class 10cf or later).

A Post Medieval lead alloy biface token, c. AD 1550-1800. Powell type 2 and uncertain type on reverse. One face seems to be decorated with a series of three or possibly four initials in two lines, S.(?)//(?)R. The other face is elaborately decorated with thin intersecting lines similar to a snowflake. As the token has been damaged and is also irregularly cast into an oblong, sub-oval shape, some detail is missing. Tokens had a wide variety of uses and were distributed widely over a long period of time; they are therefore difficult to date specifically out of secure contexts but …

A Post Medieval cast lead alloy uniface token dating from AD 1550-1800. Powell Type 2. One side of the token is decorated with a crude and damaged letter, possibly an 'F' or 'E', which has been difigured by a blob of lead alloy which pooled at the base of the letter. Lead tokens were easy to manufacture and distributed widely over a long period of time; they are therefore, difficult to date precisely out of archaeological context but those with initials are thought to date to the Post Medieval period.

A fragment of a Medieval lead alloy seal matrix dating to the c. 14th century AD. The seal matrix would have been discoidal, but now only a small portion of the seal surface remains along with a portion of a raised vertical ridge on the reverse surface.
