A complete cast lead-alloy standing or hanging weight of uncertain date, probably Roman to Post Medieval, c. 43-1700 AD. The weight is roughly bell shaped, with a thick ridge at its top (though no aperture for suspension) and a prominent dimple in its base. The object is relatively well made, and survives in good condition with a patchy whitish brown patina. The lack of a perforation or aperture in the pre-prepared suspension area suggests that this weight may not have been finished properly, or possibly only existed in order to make the piece easier to pick up. The weight stands 29.4…

A cast lead alloy weight of uncertain date and attribution, possibly of Roman date. The weight is of a rectangular cuboid shape, with a rectangular cross-sectioned suspension bar on the upper face with a small circular suspension hole running parallel to the upper face and a semi-circular impression directly above the hole on the outer surface of the suspension bar, possibly indicating where the suspension element wrapped around the bar. No decoration is visible on the faces of the weight and the medium-grey lead alloy colour is covered in buff-white encrustation. The weight measures …

A cast copper alloy fragment of a possible vessel, possibly dating from the Iron Age or Early Medieval period. The fragment consists of three pieces of copper-alloy held in place with a large cylindrical-headed rivet with a square reverse. The first segment consists of a cylindrical loop, which is attached to a rectangular segment ending in a flat end with semi-circular aperture, probably a further rivet hole, now incomplete due to old breaks. The interior plate is formed to match the rectangular segment of the outer piece, mentioned above. It is comprised of a single rectangular …

An incomplete copper alloy pin belonging to probably either a Medieval annular brooch or buckle or Post Medieval buckle, c. 12th-18th centuries AD. The remains of the pin consist of a portion of the oval suspension loop, followed by a flat pin body, similar to a tweezer plate, which begins narrowly near to the suspension loop and then widens slightly to a flat-edge end. The outer surface of the pin has been decorated with slightly transverse grooves creating repeating raised ribs; it is possible that near to the flat end there is a small raised circular decoration, but this is obscu…

An unidentified object of uncertain date and attribution. The object consists of a large conical sheet of copper alloy that has been turned into an open-ended cone, lined within by a thin curved piece of wood fixed in place by means of an irregularly shaped rivet on one side of the sheet with a similar circular rivet hole on the other side. The edge where the sheet has been turned into a cone and soldered into place is visible and there is some damage on that edge where the plate has been torn away from the solder line. The object has an uneven green colour and has areas of rough te…

An unidentified cast copper-alloy object possibly related to either a strap end or pendant dating from the Roman to Post Medieval period. The object is conical, with a conical raised terminal at one end and a circular break at the wider end. There is a small circular indentation or break on the upper surface. This object bears similarities with pseud-phallic apron pendants and strap ends dating to the Roman period, however this particular example is quite large and heavy. It measures 43.37 mm long, 11.62 mm diameter at broken end, 6.89 mm diameter at terminal end; it weighs 15.76 grams.

A fragment of an at least two-piece cast copper-alloy object, probably dating from the Roman to Medieval period. The object consists of what seems to be an incomplete rectangular loop with small rectangular projection from one side, the rectangular loop is still holding another element within its loop, consisting of a thin, sub-triangular sheet of copper alloy which has been curved around at its narrowed end to resemble a suspension loop, then widens into a segment which looks similar to a tweezer blade or similar object. The loop-end is the end that is articulated most closely with t…

A cast copper-alloy cylindrical object, possibly a gaming piece or similar object, and probably dating from the post-Medieval period. The object has two flat large circular faces which are both decorated with incised designs, which seem to be the same, consisting of a crude long cross fourchee with simple forked ends and a single annulet in each angle. It is possible that this was meant to bear a crude resemblance to pennies of the period; however, this is uncertain as no parallels have been found. The metal is of a dark green colour with areas of reddish colouration visible in some a…

A cast copper-alloy unidentified fragment of an object of probable Roman to Post Medieval date. The fragment consists of a sub-oval thinner disc of copper-alloy, with a sub-conical and irregularly moulded segment attached to it. It is possible that this fragment is either a very simple vessel foot with attached vessel wall, or similar. Another possibility is that the conical fragment was originally zoomorphic in decoration and could possibly be some form of decorative vessel mount; however these types of mounts are often attached separately and this is clearly connected to the other…

A tapering object composed of copper-alloy and cast, possibly a worn tool, either a chisel or awl of uncertain date. The object is sub-cylindrical, with one wedge-shaped end and one end that is sub-circular in cross-section. Due to its shape and dark green patina, it is possible that this is a very worn Middle to Late Bronze Age chisel, c. 1600-801 BC; however, similar items are known to date to later periods, therefore a more general Bronze Age to Medieval date is given below.

A large lead alloy conical weight with iron suspension shaft running through it, probably dating from the Roman or Medieval periods. The weight has a rounded convex base rather than a flattened circular base as is usual; the iron shaft is bent over onto the base's surface and flattened into place. The upper portion of the conical weight has broken off including a suspension loop or similar element. Lead alloy weights were easy to manufacture and similar types were used throughout a large period of time; they are therefore difficult to date out of secure archaeological contexts …

A copper alloy hooked strap fitting, possibly a dress hook or hooked tag dating from the Early Medieval to early Post Medieval periods. The object has an oval discoidal head with a central circular rivet hole; below this is are two projecting knops flanking a rearward-facing sharp hook. There is no further decoration. Although the object bears some similarity to Early Medieval hooked tags or early Post Medieval dress hooks, a parallel for this particular type has not been found. Therefore a more general date range is suggested here.
