A copper alloy pin head probably dating to the 8th century. The object is sub-circular in plan and flat with an irregular edge.There is a possible hole through the middle which is visible on both sides of the object however it is now corroded over. The back of the object is undecorated and irregular with some areas of active corrosion. The front of the object is decorated and gilded. Around the circular hole there is a circular incised border. A mourning ring commemorating Sir John Marlay who died in 1673 and was mayor of Newcastle three times in the 17th century. The ring is circular, complete, and has a D-shaped cross-section. An incomplete copper alloy dragonesque brooch dating to the period AD 50 to 175. The brooch has the characteristic S-shape although the head and foot are now missing. The body is 27.6 mm long and 14.19 mm wide. There are traces of enamel on the body of the brooch in blue and yellow. The surface is quite damaged which makes interpreting the original layout difficult although it seems likely that this would have been a Hunter type A2 or A3. Dragonesque brooches are thought to be Romano-British due to the clear continuity in the indigenous style with Roman elements also apparent.

A copper alloy dolphin or Polden Hill brooch dating to the Roman period and probably to 75-175 AD. The object has a sub-rectangular head which has been rounded by wear. The head is concave and would have held a spring mechanism. The bow arches up and away from the head of the brooch before curving downwards and back whilst tapering to a point. There is a raised line which runs the length of the bow. The catchplate and pin are both missing. Similar objects have been recorded on the PAS database, see GLO-DC6FB6 and DUR-11CE71.

A copper alloy simple terret ring daing from the Late Iron Age, to early Roman period, c. 100 BC to AD 100. The terret ring consists of a copper alloy loop which is D-shaped with the straight side missing. There are breaks at either end which display evidence for iron corrosion suggesting a separately cast bar. There are small collars on each end before the breaks. Terret rings were used on carts or chariots and there are several recorded on the PAS database, see BERK-C0DC62 and NLM-11CCF7.

A silver spoon. The bowl of the spoon is oval and complete with little damage other than wear. On the underside of the bowl is a scratched or incised floral decoration surrounding the attachment of the stem which takes a "rat-tail" form and extends approximately halfway along the bowl. A lead ampulla dating to the medieval period, c. 1350 to 1530. The object is nearly complete with but with some damage to the top and one handle missing. There is some surface damage making the decoration unclear however, on one side there appears to be a shell. On the other side there is a horizontal band with small pellets in it with three upwardly projecting lines. . On either side of the lines are is a trefoil on a line which might represent a crown.

At either end of the head there three incised lines. The bow is plain and undecorated. The pin and spring are both missing. Brooches of this type are more commonly found south of the Humber (Bayley and Butcher 2004: 155 -157) and there are similar examples in Hattatt (1989: fig 156).

A copper alloy dolphin brooch dating to the period c. AD 75 to AD 200. The object has a cylindrical head with a copper core where the hinge would have been located. There is an incised line at either end of the head but is otherwise undecorated. The bow curves away from the head and tapers towards the foot. There are two incised lines along the length of the bow. The catchplate is nearly intact however the pin is missing. There are two examples of this type of brooch in Bayley and Butcher (2004: 89) and a similar example in Hattatt (1989: fig 158).

Part of a gold, Roman earring dating to the 1st or 2nd centuries AD. The earring consists of a double boss made up of two convex faces from a single sheet of metal. There are two small, granulated pellets which sit on the waist between the two bosses. There is no form of attachment but it is likely that there would have been gold wire soldered on. This earring is an Allason-Jones type 13b which normally has three pellets on the waist. It is fairly unusual in Britain however an earring of this type has been found at Caerleon, Gwent (National Museum of Wales Acc. No. 54.389A:F5). …
