A plain and undecorated finger ring possibly dating to the Roman period. The object is sub-circular although this is possibly due to the plough activity. The section is D-shaped however this is not very pronounced. There is one lateral groove however this is the only decoration. A complete copper alloy finger ring, missing the setting and dating to the 12th or 13th century. The ring has a circular hoop and the sides of the hoop gradually slope upwards towards an oval bezel. There is no stone present but it seems likely that there would have been a small stone or glass fitted in the oval space. Rings of this type are called "stirrup-shaped" rings and a similar one was found in London although it was made of pewter (Egan and Pritchard number 1608), and was dated to the period AD 1230 to 1260. There is a another example, excavated in the 1970s and now in the W…

Part of a medieval silver-gilt 'fede' ring dating to the 15th century. The bezel consists of two clasped hands with a crown above. The crown has two circular perforations which separate the separate elements. There are collars on each side just beyond the wrist. The breaks are just beyond the collars on both sides however these are rough and uneven so it seems unlikely that they were intentionally cut. Fede rings come from the Italian for faith (mani in fede) and came to symbolise love and faith. They are popular from the 15th century although the motif of the clasped hands is k…
