A copper alloy medieval buckle frame dating to the period AD 1350 to 1450.
The loop of the buckle is D-shaped in plan although the curve is pointed. There is no evidence for a forked spacer although very similar so it is likely that it would have been contemporary to buckles of that type. Marshall classes this as a type 1H and dates it to the period AD 1350 to 1450.

A copper alloy buckle dating to the period AD 1660 to 1720.
The buckle is double looped although the central bar is missing. There is decoration at four points on the frame, scalloping detail on the two short sides and lines across the frame at the point where the spindle would have been attached where there is evidence for iron corrosion. The decoration is slightly earlier in style however the construction confirms the late 17th century date.

A copper alloy buckle and plate dating to the medieval period, c. 1350 to 1500.
The buckle frame is kidney shaped in plan with a slightly recessed area which would have held the pin which is now missing. A copper alloy buckle plate dating to the medieval period, c. AD 1350 to 1500.
The object is sub-rectangular in plan and is made from a sheet of copper alloy. A sub-rectangular hole has been cut into the metal and the sheet is folded over at this point creating a loop for attachment to the buckle frame and a space for the pin. There are three rivets which go through both sides of the folded metal and would have held the plate to the strap. The front of the object is decorated with a rectangular frame around the rivets. There is also a zig-zag pattern running the length of the objec…

An incomplete post medieval buckle frame in two parts dating to the 17th century.
When complete this buckle would have had two parts as can be seen from the fractures. The outside of the frame is pentagonal in plan although the inside of the frame is square. There are knops to either side of the cross bar and very little of the other half of the frame remains.
Buckles of this type have been classified by Marshall as type IIID and were used to attach spurs.

An incomplete post medieval double-loop buckle dating to the period AD c. 1660-1720.
The frame is sub-rectangular in plan with curved corners. The inner side of the frame curves inwards along the long sides towards the pin. The tongue is missing but the chape is still in place although the terminal is fractured. It is likely that this terminal would have either been of the stud or the anchor type.
Buckles of this type where used during this period on shoes and also to fasten breeches below the knee (see Marshall Type V buckles).

An incomplete post medieval double loop buckle dating to the period c. 1720-1790.
The frame is rectangular in plan and the pin runs the length of the frame rather than the width. The pin is still in place although highly corroded. There is evidence for two tongues and it appears that they are integral to the spindle.
Marshall has suggested that buckles of this type were used on hats and breeches although due to the size of this one and the lack of chape it is possible that it was used for fastening garters.
