Object type: DIRK
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Northumberland
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragmentary copper-alloy dirk or rapier of middle to late Bronze Age date, c. 1500-1100 BC. The dirk or rapier fragment is sub-triangular, with the incomplete base and shoulders and the base of the blade. The base would have been semi-circular or similar in outline, and the top edge of a rivet hole remains at the end. A central spine runs down the length of the fragment, with very worn and corroded edges remaining. In section, the blade is lozenge-shaped. While corrosion has undoubtably removed much of the blade, it seems likely that the blade edges has been worn through use in th…

A cast copper-alloy statuette or figurine fragment in classical tradition of Roman date. The naturalistic foot and calf of the figuring remain, with an extension off the inside ball of the foot indicating attachment to a now missing base or a casting error. The foot is only slightly extended from the upright leg, and neither leg nor foot bear any clothing or footwear. Flashmarks are visible running down the inside shine to the big toe, with the upper portion filed, and another seam running down the middle of the outer face of the calf to the small toe. Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy unidentified mount of probable Iron Age to Roman date. The object is incomplete, with a discoidal base and a hollow sub-circular projection with an abraded break. The outside of the projection is slightly ridged. Emerging from the underside of the base is an incomplete iron shank of rectangular section. In appearance, the mount is superficially similar to a terret with a collared base, but it is definitely not a terret. The closest parallel that could be found was a linch pin, and this object may be an incomplete terminal though the identification is not confid…

A copper-alloy bell of probable Roman date. The bell is incomplete, missing the clapper and suffering damage at the base. It is conical with a sub-triangular suspension loop at the apex. The base has a slight raised ridge approximately 3mm above the edge. Internally, the clapper would have suspended from a suspension loop that is now missing along with the clapper. The bell was made with a sheet of copper alloy and hammered or bent into place with the double-ended suspension loops soldered into the apex and the ends of the sheet welded together. There are fine file-marks on the su…
