Medieval copper alloy mount measuring 54.22mm in length, 40.57mm in width, 10.49mm in thickness and weighing 53.3g. The object is sub-circular in plan with a approx. 10mm shaft extending outwards before ending in an old breakage point. The object is slighting curved in profile, with the peak of the curve being the middle of the round section, which is also the thickest. The convex surface of the fixture is very rough, while the concave side is much smoother although it has a number of light scratches on its surface. The mount may be a vessel escutcheon, with the concave face a l…

A cast copper-alloy unidentified mount of probable Iron Age to Roman date. The object is incomplete, with a discoidal base and a hollow sub-circular projection with an abraded break. The outside of the projection is slightly ridged. Emerging from the underside of the base is an incomplete iron shank of rectangular section. In appearance, the mount is superficially similar to a terret with a collared base, but it is definitely not a terret. The closest parallel that could be found was a linch pin, and this object may be an incomplete terminal though the identification is not confid…

A cast copper-alloy bird mount of Roman date. The bird is simple in execution, with an oblong body supporting a short neck, on which rests a globular head with a beak. Corrosion has obscured any detail of the bird, though a fair patina remains, suggesting there may have been no further detail. The flat underside has a short cylindrical shank. The bird may have been mounted on a vessel originally, though other types of object remain a possibility.

A copper alloy mount dating to the early medieval period, c. AD 600 to 800. The object is circular in plan with a flat reverse. There is a small, triangular area missing and the method of attachment is unclear but otherwise the object appears to be complete. In the centre of the front there is a blue stone or glass inlay which is circular. There is some damage to the stone. There is a beige coloured border around the blue stone and then a wider border. This wider border contains an interlace pattern which appears to be inlaid with yellow enamel. The object is similar to escutc…

An incomplete copper alloy cinquefoil mount of medieval date. The face of the mount has a cinquefoil design where incised lines are used to define the petals. There is an annulet in the centre creating a floral effect. There is no decoration on the reverse but there is evidence for two rivets. One has broken off but it is possible to see where it was attached to the plate. The other is intact and curves outwards. Both rivets are circular in section. There are examples of cinquefoil mounts in Egan and Pritchard (1991: 186) however these are much more ornate than this example. T…

An incomplete mount possibly of post medieval date. The mount is heart shape in plan however there are breaks along the straight edges suggesting that this is not the complete shape, it may have had more 'petals'. This is supported by the fact that there is only one rivet on the reverse which is in an unusual place, near the edge in on of the bulbs of the heart.

A cast copper-alloy mount dating to the period c. 1500 to 1700. The object consists of a large circle with an irregular internal edge. There is a smaller circle attached to the outside of the larger circle. There is another projection approximately 120 degrees from the small circle. This projection is rectangular and looks as though it is two collars which would have then have extended further into a decorative foliate mount. This projection is curved in profile. A cast copper alloy mount in the shape of a bird with wings spread. The body of the bird is a long triangle in shape with a flat tail. The wings are sub-rectangular in plan and are attached to the body at angles. One of the wings is incomplete but the other shows detailing representing the feathers. There is evidence for gilding on both the top and the bottom of the mount. There is a break on the underside of the bird which is round in shape. Similar examples have been recorded on the PAS database such as BH-C3F578 and IOW-9AC861 but neither of these show evidence for gilding.

A copper-alloy mount dating to the medieval period, c. AD 1300 to 1450. The mount is lozenge shaped in plan with a double border running all the way around the edge of the mount. There is raised detailing on the front of the mount however this is very worn and so it is difficult to see what it is meant to be. The back of the mount is undecorated although there is a circular depression which contains the stud in the centre. Lozenge shaped mounts are listed in Egan and Pritchard. Number 1077 is also copper alloy, has raised decoration and has been dated to the period c. 1270 to 135…

A copper alloy mount, possibly dating to the medieval period, c. AD 1200 to 1500. The object has a sub-rectangular shaft with a spherical knop at one end. There is a small circular hole throough the shaft. At the opposite end to the knop is an irregular lozenge-shaped terminal with three concentric lozenge shapes and a hole in centre. The lozenge is slightly concave. The holes through the object suggest a means of attachment but it is unclear what the object was used for.

A copper alloy mount, probably of medieval or post-medieval date, c. AD 1400 to 1700. The object is sub-circular in plan with some irregular breaks however these have a patina consistent with the rest of the object which suggests that they are not recent. On the front of the object has a sub-circular knop. The object has a concave reverse which is undecorated however there is some ferrous corrosion from the knop on the front but may also have been the means of attaching the mount to a a larger object. There is a similar object recorded on the PAS database, see LANCUM-64D34F.

A copper alloy mount probably dating to the medieval period. The object is circular in plan with a narrow frame. Within the frame is a bird which is looking back on itself with feathers ruffled. The effect created by the openwork means that the bird appears in silhouette. There is not obvious means of attachment perhaps suggesting suspension from an organic strap or perhaps the projection for a mount has simply worn away. There is a similar object on the PAS database, see record PUBLIC-407C04.

A copper alloy mount with evidence for solder on the reverse and probably dating to the late medieval or early post-medieval periods. The object is lozenge shaped in plan and has a separate, smaller lozenge sheet attached to the front. There are incised lines perpendicular to the edge of the back sheet and there are incised borders on both lozenges which run parallel to the edges. In the centre of the small lozenge there is a silvery area which is again lozenge shaped which may suggest another smaller lozenge was soldered to the front. The back of the object is flat and undecorated.…

A copper alloy openwork mount dating to the post medieval period, c. 1500 to 1700. The object is flat on the front and back with bevelled internal and external edges. There is an openwork lis shape with a riveted protrusion coming out of the top of it. The lis shape extends downwards and becomes solid with another rivet. The object terminates in a sub-triangular shape which curves under slightly, perhaps suggesting this may have been a dress hook. Similar objects are recorded on the PAS database, see IOW-A78235 and CORN-169AA4.

A copper alloy gilded mount dating to the post medieval period, c. 1600 to 1800. The object has a square head with a narrow border surrounding an outward curved square panel. Extending downwards from the square head is a narrower shaft which widens and then tapers before a downward pointing heart-shaped terminal. There is evidence for gilding both on the head of the mount and on the shaft. It appears that there may have been a pattern beneath the gilding but due to wear this is no longer clear. A copper alloy mount dating to the medieval period, c. AD 1150 to 1250. The object is anthropomorphic in design with a sub-rectangular (in plan) three dimensional head. There are some facial features including two circular holes for eyes and a long, bulbous nose. There is a frame around the face, possible representing hair or a head dress. The head then tapers to form a neck before widening and flattening to shoulders and a sub-rectangular body. There are two rivet holes which would have attached the mount to a reliquary box or cross. A copper alloy silvered mount dating to the post medieval or early modern period. The object is sub-circular in plan with 16 holes around the outside presumably for attachment to another object. There is pressed decoration on the front (which is visible on the back). This depicts a saddled horse standing left and held by a figure. The horse appears to be a light type of horse, possibly an Arabian or Thoroughbred. There is a banner above the horse with letters although these are not very clear they possibly read T.. WICKT. There is a banner below the scene but this is now completely…
