Roman silver ring containing small carved stone intaglio. The ring has a narrow, flattened hoop expanding and thickening towards the shoulders (Henig Type III; Henig 2007, 35-6, Fig.1). The bezel has an intaglio, probably of glass, with a flat surface and bevelled edge (Shape F2 or F4; ibid). It depicts an anchor with two fish hanging from its crossbar - a common early Christian symbol. A mourning ring commemorating Sir John Marlay who died in 1673 and was mayor of Newcastle three times in the 17th century. The ring is circular, complete, and has a D-shaped cross-section. Approximately 25% of the outside face of the ring is decorated; the central motif is a crude, incised skull. Either side of the skull there is some incised cross-hatching decoration which terminates in a point in the middle of the width of the band. The point has a star incised at that point. A complete gold posy finger ring dating to the 16th or 17th century. The ring is simple and has a D-shaped section. The outside of the ring has two circumferential grooves which are very close to the edge. The inscription on the inside of the ring reads FEARE . GOD . DREDE . SHAME. The start and ends of the inscription is partially obscured and the interior surface of the ring becomes rough and unfinished. A complete gold finger ring of 16th-17th century date. The ring is composed of a strip of D-sectioned gold, bent and seal with a butt joint. The outer surface of the ring has a raised repeating crossed hatch design which creates repeating lines of two diamond cells and two separate half or triangular cells in each row. A bezel fragment of a silver 'fide' finger-ring of late Medieval date (Ad 1400-1500). The bezel in the form of two clasped hands with a hoop made from a strip of metal with the ends soldered together at a butt joint. The hands were soldered on top of the joint, both masking and reinforcing it. Sleeve cuffs and folds are represented by moldings and grooves. An incomplete and damaged silver medieval finger ring dating to the 12th century AD. The ring is made from a sheet of silver and in plan the object would be biconcave. The bezel is missing although the wide shoulders are present before narrowing to form the band. There is incised decoration which takes the form of lines which run diagonally across the outer edge of the ring. On the shoulders, these lines are wider apart with shorter lines running between them. There are similar examples on the PAS database, see for example SUR-BCFB42.
