An incomplete, damaged silver finger ring dating to the medieval period. The object is made from a single sheet of silver, 0.68 mm thick, which would be biconvex if flattened. The ring has been folded over twice with the two ends folded over on themselves. There is no distinct bezel however the widest section of the ring is decorated on one side. There are two lateral incised lines across the band either side of the 'bezel' with three deeper lines running between the two collars and shallower, diagonal incisions as decoration. Between the collar and the folded terminals there are …

A mourning ring commemorating Sir John Marlay who died in 1673 and was mayor of Newcastle three times in the 17th century. The ring is circular, complete, and has a D-shaped cross-section. Approximately 25% of the outside face of the ring is decorated; the central motif is a crude, incised skull. Either side of the skull there is some incised cross-hatching decoration which terminates in a point in the middle of the width of the band. The point has a star incised at that point. There are some traces of black enamel in the incised decoration although it is likely that there would have …

A gold posy ring of post medieval date, late 17th century to early 18th century. The ring is circular in plan with a D-shaped cross section. The outside of the ring is not decorated although there are a few marks, probably from depostion. The inside of the ring has an inscription in an italic script which reads "Love is the Bond of Peace". There is a makers mark at the start of the inscription with the letters I and H in a rectangular frame. Judy Rudoe of the British Museum comments "I think the mark might be IH rather than HI, see AF 1320 and 1961,1202.283 in BM. The mark is n…

Roman silver ring containing small carved stone intaglio. The ring has a narrow, flattened hoop expanding and thickening towards the shoulders (Henig Type III; Henig 2007, 35-6, Fig.1). The bezel has an intaglio, probably of glass, with a flat surface and bevelled edge (Shape F2 or F4; ibid). It depicts an anchor with two fish hanging from its crossbar - a common early Christian symbol. XDRF analysis suggests that the principal material is silver with a significant copper content and smaller concentrations of zinc, lead and gold. Birley, E.,1961.'A Christian Monogram From Brough-…

A complete gold finger ring of 16th-17th century date. The ring is composed of a strip of D-sectioned gold, bent and seal with a butt joint. The outer surface of the ring has a raised repeating crossed hatch design which creates repeating lines of two diamond cells and two separate half or triangular cells in each row. This would have originally held enamel, which is now missing. The inner surface is smooth and flat with an incised inscription in Roman lettering. There is no visible makers mark. The object's form has been distorted by post-depositional processes. Inscription:…

A gold finger ring dating to the medieval period, c. 15th century. The ring is circular in plan and sub-rectangular in section. The hoop is quite broad at 7.24 mm in width. The outer face of the hoop of the ring has incised decoration two hands and two feet each of which has a circular hole through it. There is also a simple heart shape which has a pointed oval shape on the left side, perhaps to represent the piercing of the heart. These motifs likely represent the Five Wounds of Christ which were thought to have protective qualities. In between each wound there are a series of dro…
