A complete pointed oval seal matrix dating to the medieval period, c. 1200 to 1300.
The object is flat, with some edges damaged. The back of the object has the remains of a suspension loop present. The front of the object has incised decoration with a legend around the outside which reads * S' ELINORE: FIL'. PET (Seal of Eleanor, daughter of Pet[er]) The motif in the centre of the matrix is unclear but features a central vertical line with two horizontal lines crossing it. A lead ampulla probably dating to the medieval period, c. AD 1350 to 1550.
The object has a rounded body and a broad neck and has been flattened, probably through depositional activity. Both handles or suspension loops are broken away and missing. There is some evidence of a decorative motif on one side of the object in the form of cross hatching however it is unclear what this is meant to represent. The other side of the object is apparently undecorated. Similar forms of ampulla can be found illustrated in Spencer's Salibury Medieval Catalogue, part 2 (1990: 89-92; figs 180-189).…
