A mourning ring commemorating Sir John Marlay who died in 1673 and was mayor of Newcastle three times in the 17th century. The ring is circular, complete, and has a D-shaped cross-section. Approximately 25% of the outside face of the ring is decorated; the central motif is a crude, incised skull. Either side of the skull there is some incised cross-hatching decoration which terminates in a point in the middle of the width of the band. The point has a star incised at that point. There are some traces of black enamel in the incised decoration although it is likely that there would have …

A gold posy ring of post medieval date, late 17th century to early 18th century. The ring is circular in plan with a D-shaped cross section. The outside of the ring is not decorated although there are a few marks, probably from depostion. A complete gold posy ring dating to the post medieval period. The object is circular in plan and D-shaped in section. The edges of the ring are quite sharp suggesting that it was not worn for long before being lost. There is a little bit of damage to the ring, possibly from a plough. The outside of the ring is smooth and undecorated with a matt finish, possibly due to being in the ground. There is an inscripton on the inner face of the ring which reads NO FREND TO FAITH with small saltires in between each word and two short parallel lines after FAITH. The lettering used for the ins…

A complete gold finger ring dating to the post medieval or modern period. The object is circular in plan and circular in section with no decoration. There are some stamped marks on the inner surface of the ring but these are difficult to decipher. Judy Rudoe of the British Museum says "I cannot decipher the stamped marks inside, and the shape looks recent, so this is one where you say not enough evidence to date pre 1714."
