The object is circular in plan and on one side the words YORK AND SHEEPSHANKS as a border surrounding the word LEEDS in the centre of the field. The back of the seal is undecorated although there are some incised lines which may be the letters HIZ. The York and Sheepshanks company was a cloth manufacturer based in Leeds during the 18th and 19th centuries and it seems likely that this seal was used to confirm the production and quality of a bale of cloth.
