Roman silver ring containing small carved stone intaglio. The ring has a narrow, flattened hoop expanding and thickening towards the shoulders (Henig Type III; Henig 2007, 35-6, Fig.1). The bezel has an intaglio, probably of glass, with a flat surface and bevelled edge (Shape F2 or F4; ibid). It depicts an anchor with two fish hanging from its crossbar - a common early Christian symbol. XDRF analysis suggests that the principal material is silver with a significant copper content and smaller concentrations of zinc, lead and gold. Birley, E.,1961.'A Christian Monogram From Brough-…

A mourning ring commemorating Sir John Marlay who died in 1673 and was mayor of Newcastle three times in the 17th century. The ring is circular, complete, and has a D-shaped cross-section. Approximately 25% of the outside face of the ring is decorated; the central motif is a crude, incised skull. Either side of the skull there is some incised cross-hatching decoration which terminates in a point in the middle of the width of the band. The point has a star incised at that point. There are some traces of black enamel in the incised decoration although it is likely that there would have …

A silver letter M, most likely a pin or badge of Medieval date (AD 1300-1500). The object is flat with no surface decoration, there are some minor notched incisions to the front surface of the object, these however do not appear to constitute a decorative pattern. Its form is Lombardic and the letter itself is ornate and a typical Medieval style with slanting serifs at each angle of the letter. The reverse is flat and undecorated, with a horizontal band (6.56mm wide) of solder across the centre which terminates in an old break. Such objects were popular during the Medieval period a…
