An incomplete iron socketed tool of Roman date, AD 43 - 410. It is roughly triangular in plan, and rectangular in cross-section. One end has parallel sides and tapers in thickness to a break, and in the other direction tapers to the remains of a socket. The socket area expands in width, and has incomplete sides that start to turn over at the top. The wide end may also be broken. An incomplete iron artefact, of Roman date, AD 41 - 410. It is sub-rectangular in plan, square at one end and tapering and curving to a rounded point at the other. The main body of the artefact is thicker along one edge than the other and the rounded point, which is set at a slight angle to the orientation of the main portion, is also thinner than the main body. An incomplete copper plated iron barrel padlock of early medieval to medieval date, about AD 950 - 1400, perhaps more likely to be from the later end of the range suggested. Only a fragment of the case survives. It is part of a cylinder made of iron with a copper alloy surface coating. The outer face is decorated with longitudinal ridges. It has an iron core, and an outer of a grey, grainy material that can be scratched with a finger nail, and leaves a streak on paper (possibly a burnt ceramic or organic material). The iron appears to be a thin rod or wire in the centre. The object is rounded at both ends. Measurements are; length 29.7mm, maximum diameter 7.0mm and weight 5.94g. A hand-forged Medieval to Post Medieval wrought iron Axehead dating from about AD 1250 - 1800. The axehead has a near straight top-edge with slight curve to the end of the blade, and a slight bulge at the socket. The underside angles from the heel of the blade to the handle to form a tapering triangular shape. A complete iron bladed knife, a billhook or other form of curved knife, of unknown date, Roman to Post Medieval, AD 43 - 1800. It has a scale tang with two incomplete wooden scales forming the handle surviving. Three iron rivets secure the scales to the tang. The blade is the same width as the tang. In most modern examples, the blade is wider and steps narrower to the handle. The blade has a curved tip and is sharpened on the inner side of the curve only. A copper alloy coated iron object, probably a nail or a similar fixing, probably of Post Medieval date, AD 1600 - 1900. It has a broadly square flat head, which is slightly curved. It appears green in colour, but gives a strong magnetic response. Projecting from the centre of the convex face is a central broken possible shank, sheared off on two faces. A cast iron cannon ball, and judging from the size and weight, probably for use in a Falconet or similar small artillery weapon, dating from about AD 1500-1900. A Falconet was a small cannon used both on land and in light naval vessels. A number were used during the English Civil War (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falconet_(cannon). The iron ball is spherical and corroded. It is 65mm diameter and 992g (2lb, 3oz).
