A copper alloy object, possibly a handle from a window, door or furniture, and likely to be of Post medieval to modern date, about AD 1500 - 1900. It is solid copper alloy and is square in cross-section, tapering in thickness from a square end with slightly bevelled edges, to a slight kink where the handle measures 9.1mm wide and 6.8mm thick. Beyond the kink, which is 12mm from the end, the thickness increases again before an uneven break. The damage is patinated. The object has a smooth glossy green patina with some file marks visible. It is 77.6mm long, 13.5mm wide and 12.8mm thick.…

Silver decorative whistle, spherical body or buoy made of two parts of silver sheet soldered together with a raised rib. Each hemisphere decorated with raised flower-head pattern and central knop. Thin gun of silver with a flange to hold the whistle by. Damaged. Decoration recalls that on 16th Century dress pins and fittings and this is likely to be of that date. Compare a tin whistle of similar form in the NMM, PT 0457, there called a boatswain's call, and six in the MOL from the Thames foreshore. Silver whistles were used as badges of office and for giving signals at sea. Compare al…

A copper alloy musical instrument; a whistle or other similar pipe like instrument. The whistle is made from a cast tube of copper alloy. Towards one terminal is a semi-circular hole which is obliquely angled in profile to provide a lip which would give the whistle's sound. Half way between this end and the broken end is an incised line round the pipe, presumably decorative. The far end is broken, and there is damage on the lower part of the pipe. It is 66.07mm in length, 10.1mm in diameter, and weighs 15.59g. Very few copper alloy whistles have been recorded on the database. Some o…

A cast lead alloy (pewter?) whistle in the form of a pipe bowl, dating from 1750 -1900. The bowl is damaged with the entire rim missing. It is cast and there are projecting blobs along the casting spur. The bowl is long and oval and sits relatively vertically. There is a short rounded spur on the heel instead of a flat platform which suggests a date later than 1600 (Ayto, 2002, Shire Album 37: Clay tobacco pipes). The stem has broken off. There is some decoration near the stem in the form of a row of arches in relief. The pipe bowl is 34.3mm high, measures 24.6mm from the broken end…

An incomplete post medieval lead alloy whistle, probably dating from the 15th-16th century, but possibly later. Only part of the tube survives. It is circular in section and has a rectangular slot along one face. The sides are decorated with moulded patterns; transverse lines and ladder patterns are visible. Projecting form the face opposite the slot are the remains of moulded decoration and a round suspension loop. These elements are very similar to the whistle catalogued as number 216e on page 208 of Spencer, 1998. The whistle fragment is 30.4mm long, 12.7mm wide and 7.8mm thick.…

An incomplete post medieval lead alloy whistle dating from AD 1700 - 1900. The whistle is cylindrical with a half cylindrical mouthpiece. Only the mouthpiece end of the whistle survives. There is a crescent-shaped sound hole at the point where the mouthpiece narrows. The cylindrical part of the tube is decorated with an abstract curvilinear design in relief lines. There are obvious casting seams along the sides of the tube. The rest of the whistle is missing so it is not known what form it took. An incomplete Medieval to Post Medieval lead alloy probable whistle dating from AD 1400-1700. Only one end of a tube survives, probably the mouthpiece of a bosun's (boatswain's) style whistle. The terminal of the tube has a rounded corner between the sides and the end of the tube, and a hole in the end which is smaller in diameter at 4.7mm than the diameter of the tube (10.7mm). The tube expands slightly from the terminal, and is decorated after 15mm with a triple collar. An incomplete silver post medieval whistle dating from about AD 1500 - 1650. The tubular whistle is made of silver sheet and soldered lengthways along an abutting seam. A collar of spiralled silver wire divides the whistle into two sections. Comparison with more complete examples suggests there would have been a second wound wire collar and third section, now missing. A cast lead alloy (pewter?) whistle in the form of a pipe bowl, dating from 1750 -1900. The bowl is sub-conical with a pattern of raised dots on the lower half of the bowl. A raised line in a scallop pattern defines the lower half of the bowl, and above the line is a single row of raised dots and then plain metal to the rim. The mouthpiece is intact, shaped for blowing, being D shaped in section with a separate piece fixed underneath producing a curved underside expanding to a circular sectioned tube. There is a sound slit half way along the top of the whistle. This is distorted but relatively undamaged. There are the remains of a maker's mark just above slit between it and the mouthpiece. A rectangular block of hard, fine-grained, dark grey stone, probably used for honing blades. There are scratches and shallow grooves on all faces of the stone and one face has a more deeply incised transverse groove. It is 82.3mm in length, 24.5mm wide, and 25.2mm thick. It weighs 129.3gm. Hone stones have been used throughout history, but the regularity of this one suggests that is may have been machine cut, and so it is probably 19th or 20th century in date. It was lost before it was used very much, since no side is worn down into the hollow that is often seen. When cutting hay with…

A semi-circular piece of fine grained soft red sandstone that has been ground flat on one side and on one face which are at right angles to each other. There are striations on both flat surfaces. It is 56.1mm long, 19.4mm wide, and 14.4mm thick. It weighs 22.11gm. The stone is very soft so may have been used as a polishing stone rather than a hone. It may also be natural, though the straight edges look to be man made. This sort of object is almost impossible to date.

There is a circular perforation in the wider end which appreas to have been drilled from one side. The stone is a very fine-grained purple-brown stone with small particles of mica (possibly a sort of metamorphosed slate?) which is quite soft; it can be marked with a fingernail. A whetstone or hone which is 117.3mm long, 52.7mm wide and 34.6mm thick. The stone is sub-rectangular in plan with rounded corners. It appears to be a water worn pebble which has not been deliberately shaped. One face has been used as a whetstone though. This face is very smooth and worn, but the other have not been used and are rougher. There is a semi-spherical hole in one side face of the stone, closer to one end. This appears to be natural as there are no striations within the hole to suggest deliberate working. It may be the result of an air bubble or pocket less durable material…

A rectangular length of lightweight, dark, fine-grained stone that has probably been used as a whetstone (hone or sharpening stone) as there are a number of shallow grooves on three of the surfaces. It is difficult to date with certainty but it probably dates from the Early-Medieval to Medieval periods. It is pierced at one end and a copper-alloy rivet remains in the piercing. At each end of the rivet is a small section of copper-alloy plate, probably forming a suspension mount, most of which has broken away in antiquity and is missing. The opposite end of the stone to the suspension …
