Object type: GAMING PIECE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A stone or pebble which is flat on one face and rounded (convex) on the other; oval in plan. It has been glazed with white to pale green glassy glaze with black speckles in it. It may have been decorated to use it as a gaming counter. It is of comparable size to stone and ceramic gaming pieces found at York in Anglo-Saxon contexts (Mainman and Rogers 2000, page 2566), one of which has a splash of glaze on it. Glass counters are also known from the Roman period; see for example GLO-88A182 for details. There is also evidence of rounded pebbles have been utilized as gaming pieces th…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lead alloy perforated object, a probable weight of uncertain date. The object is 69.4mm long, 27.1mm wide and 20mm thick. It weighs 120.7g which is 4.26oz. The object is a pointed oval in plan with a large round loop at one end. In section, the body of the weight is lozenge shaped; there is a ridge along the centre of each face, and round the edge with four convex panels created between the ridges. At the top, the centre ridges divide to form a ridge round the loop, which in effect is bevelled. The four panels of the body are decorated in relief. Two panels on one face are decorat…

A lead alloy spindle whorl. The whorl is circular with a central hole and a D shaped section. It has a circular recess round the central circular hole on one face. It has a diameter of 25.2mm and is 11.1mm thick. The whorl is in good condition with a dark brown patina. It weighs 36.9g. Helen Geake writes: “Dating of lead whorls is difficult. The drop spindle with which they were used continued in use until the end of the medieval period in London and Winchester (Egan, 1998, “The Medieval Household: Daily Living c1150 – c1450”; and Biddle, 1990, “Object and Economy in Medie…

Two lumps of copper alloy waste material. The larger one is semi-spherical. It is 38mm long, 33mm wide and 14.2mm thick. Its flat side is very rough and covered with short incised lines. The rounded side is smoother but still somewhat pitted. It weighs 59.5g The smaller one is shaped like a rectangular based pyramid with a lozenge shaped shaft projecting from the apex. It is 24mm long, 21.7mm wide and 18mm thick. The rectangular face is pitted and corroded, and none of the faces are well finished. It weighs 19.77g. These objects are probably indicative of metal working in the …

A lead alloy spindle whorl which is convex on one face and flat on the reverse. It has a diameter of 31.3mm and is 10.7mm thick. It has a large central hole which is tapered, being larger at the bottom than at the top so the whorl could not slide off the spindle. The top face is decorated with an unintelligible mass of slightly raised lines. Decorated spindle whorls are very rare finds in excavations, but are often found by metal detectorists. They are usually biconical and are decorated on both faces with raised dots and radiating or zig-zag ribs. They have been found in ploughsoi…

A lead alloy object which is probably a perforated weight of uncertain date. The object is sub-conical and is extensively distorted and pitted. It is 17.3mm long and 22.4mm in diameter. There is a sub-circular hole through the centre of the cone which is smaller at the top than at the bottom. This could suggest that the weight was used as a spindle whorl, as the shaping of the hole would prevent the whorl falling of the spindle. It is also possible that the perforation could have had another function, such as to attach the weight to a fishing net. Helen Geake writes: “It is very diff…

A lead alloy object which is probably a perforated weight of uncertain date. The object is sub-conical and has a deep white patina. It is 16.8mm long and 25.7mm in diameter. There is a sub-circular hole through the centre of the cone. Helen Geake writes: “It is very difficult to establish hard and fast rules with lead weights, as we have little material from excavated contexts to compare. The function of lead weights would have varied, from spindle whorls to fishing weights to trade weights.” Lead weights are very imperfectly understood currently. It is hoped that by recording them…

An unidentified stone object which is cylindrical and is 13.7mm long, with a diameter of 18.9mm. It is made of a fine grained sand stone like rock which has been cut smoothly to shape. One end of the cylinder is perfectly flat, but the other end is concave. The edges are straight, but there is some damage to the corners. The object is clearly man made but the function and date are not obvious. One possibility is a miniature mortar or a gaming piece. It has not been possible to find a parallel.

A lead alloy spindle whorl. The whorl is discoid with bevelled edges and pentagon shaped in section. There is a large gash in one side. It has a diameter of 28.9mm and is 7.8mm thick. The whorl has a mid grey patina which is thin and appears to be more recent than many commonly seen. It is also decorated in an unusual way. The bevelled faces are decorated with close set radial lines. There is also a border of similar lines round the top face, but the centre is filled with a complex motif which is mainly obscured by the central perforation. A copper alloy unidentified object. The object is sub-rectangular with rounded ends and damaged edges. It is 30.8mm long, 11.7mm wide and 5.9mm thick at the lug. The plate is 1.7mm thick. It may have originally been an elongated lozenge shape, as some of the edge at the narrower end appears to be original and tapering. The original edge is also bevelled. The plate of metal is slightly bent making the front convex. The front is covered with diagonal striations which appear to be original, though may be a side effect of the construction process. These are interrupted by the patches of co…

A lead alloy object, probably a weight, of uncertain date. The object is a lop-sided cylinder which stands nicely on one end, though it was not necessarily intended to do so. There are some deep scratches on the sides and a central hole in each end. It is not certain whether the holes link up to perforate the object. It is 16.4mm long and has a diameter of 17mm. It weighs 23.1g or 0.8oz. Little is known about the function and provenance of these lead, weight-like objects. They may be connected to fishing, but there are many other possible uses.

Object type: HARNESS RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Rotherham
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy harness ring of uncertain date. The ring is a sub-circular loop which is a rounded hexagon in section. It is 25.4mm long, 24.9mm wide and 3.6mm thick. At the narrower end of the loop the metal is much thinner and is worn, suggesting that the loop was suspended from this point. The exact function of the ring is uncertain; it may have been an attachment loop, a strap guide, or decorative. These objects are usually impossible to date as they have changed very little in the many centuries in which they were used.

A lead alloy probable perforated weight. The weight is cone shaped and has a circular hole through the centre. It appears to have been made in two pieces, first a hollow cone which was then filled with more lead leaving a line between the two pieces. There are two incised lines round the outside of the coin and possible cast decoration in the form of small vertical lines and hearts round the apex of the cone. At the top of the coin a small tube of lead extends; it is not clear whether this is part of a longer damaged tube, or whether damage to the cone has produced the tube. It is also…

A lead alloy probable standing conical weight. The weight is 23.6mm in diameter and 22.5mm thick. It weighs 51.6g. The cone shape has a flat base and a truncated top. There is a hole or circular indentation in the centre of the base which may go right through the weight, but the top is slightly squashed and it is impossible to be certain. There are diagonal scratches on the sides of the weight, and impressed marks on the base which may be deliberate stamps, but they are now unintelligible. The lead is light brown and white in colour.
