Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two lead alloy weights. Both are circular in section and oval in plan. They each have a circular central hole running through the length of the weight. These are probably line or net weights from fishing. They cannot be closely dated and are usually said to be Medieval to Modern, about 1200 - 1900 AD. These have a well developed creamy patina. Compare WAW-045791, SWYOR-6E7EF0 and HESH-723644. Each is 25mm long, by 17mm diameter. On weighs 36.64g (the one with an unpatinated gash of damage), and the other 35.77g.

Three pieces of iron; unidentified objects. The pieces were found in the same field as the Early Medieval finds SWYOR-1590A4, SWYOR-14ED88, SWYOR-14A685, SWYOR-148980, SWYOR-146DF7, SWYOR-145073, SWYOR-142DD2, SWYOR-13FF91, SWYOR-EB7AA1 and SWYOR-EB10D8, so there is a possibility they too are Early Medieval. However, there is also modern iron from the field, so the date remains unknown. There is a circular sectioned rod which is 107.5mm long, 12.26mm wide and 11.5mm thick. This is perhaps a bolt or pin. 58.2g. Also, a square sectioned rod which tapers at one end, where it is also …

Object type: METAL WORKING DEBRIS
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A piece of metal working debris; waste material, probably a solidified spill. The metal looks to be lead alloy but is surprisingly light, so may be another white metal. It is sub rectangular and irregular on one face where it was in contact with the ground, and rounded on the other face which was exposed to the air. It has an intermittent grey patina. This waste material is impossible to date, but is recorded as a potential indicator of metal working.

A copper alloy possible bead of uncertain date. The bead is sub circular in plan and D shaped in cross section with a flat inner side and convex outer side; the sides are irregular in thickness and width. A crack across one side indicates where two ends of a rod were hammered around and butted together to form the bead. There is a very fine incised pair of lines round the centre of the bead. The lines join in places, and are straight in some areas an wavy to the point of scalloping in one area. It is not clear whether these are decoration, damage or a product of the manufacturing pr…

A complete cast lead alloy line weight of unknown date, Roman to Post Medieval (1st to 17th Centuries AD). The weight is spherical in shape. The central hole is broadly circular and is positioned centrally. The internal diameter measures 3.8mm. This would seem too small for the object to be a spindle whorl. There is a slight median ridge. A possibly Roman lead alloy stylus, which is 71.31mm long and 9.66mm in diameter. The object is in fair condition with a creamy patina and weighs 33.59 grams. The object consists of a circular shaft which is tapered and faceted at one end and at the other end tapers to a point. There are many similar objects on the PAS database, but a Roman date cannot be certain as similar tools were used in later periods too, especially the medieval and Post Medieval periods.. Compare LEIC-271F31, DEV-973C97, KENT-5271F2, SUSS-0085B3 and LEIC-4F8FE5 among others.

A lead alloy line or net weight of uncertain date. It is constructed from a thick sheet of lead alloy that has been rolled into a tube. One end is flared open, but this seems to be post depositional damage, as stress marks from the bending disturb the patina. The seam is open all the way along. The ends do not appear to be broken. It has a patchy patina, being a mixture of pale cream and light brown. The sheet is 2-3mm thick.
