A lead alloy probable weight. The object is conical, and has a hole running vertically through the centre. There are several old dents on the side and base, and a recent scrape. Lead weights are imperfectly understood and cannot normally the attributed to a specific period. It is hoped that increased recording and further study of these objects will allow better understanding in the future. This one weighs 98.2g, which is not far off three ounces. The hole through this example casts some doubt on its function as a standing weight, yet the hole seems too narrow to allow use as a spindle…

A lead alloy perforated weight, probably a medieval fishing weight. The weight is 58.2mm long, 20.3mm wide and 17.7mm thick. It weighs 68.3g. It is square with concave sides in section and tapers at both ends. One end extends into a simple oval suspension loop. The weight is deeply patinated and is a creamy white colour. Lead weights are very imperfectly understood currently. It is hoped that by recording them as often as possible, a large body of data that can be studied will be built up.

A lead alloy object which is unidentified. The artifact is roughly cone shaped but with a rounded and faceted lower half and concave sides. The top is also rounded making the shape rather like a pear. The object has a diameter of 22.8mm and is 19.3mm thick. In the centre of the flat base is an irregular sub-triangular hole that extends about halfway into the centre of the object. The function of this object is unknown. It may be a weight and the hole could be to adjust the mass exactly. It could also have contained a copper alloy plug also for fine adjustment. Lead weights are very imp…

Lead alloy possible weight of unknown date. The weight is a narrow shield shape with a loop arching from side to side at the top. The front is convex. The weight is 22.8mm long, 10.3mm wide and 5.4mm thick. It weighs 6.1g (0.2oz). Helen Geake writes: “It is very difficult to establish hard and fast rules with lead weights, as we have little material from excavated contexts to compare. The function of lead weights would have varied, from spindle whorls to fishing weights to trade weights.” Lead weights are very imperfectly understood currently. A copper alloy possible weight of possible Post Medieval date. The object has a square base and tapering sides, narrowing to a long neck before swelling again slightly to form a suspension loop. It is solid copper alloy. There is no decoration and a smooth but patchy patina. It is 32.23mm long, 10.55mm wide and 9.84mm thick. This object could be a standing weight but at 10.72g (0.37oz) it is not obviously a weight in a standard weighing system. It is possible it was used for weighing a Tudor pound coin which had an official weight of 174 grains. This object weighs 165.6 grains. The…

A lead alloy probable perforated weight. It is tear drop shaped in plan, and D shaped in section. It may have been formed by pouring lead into the bowl of a spoon. A small suspension hole has been made where the stem would have been, but the hole is now damaged. It has a length of 63.40mm, width 41.68mm, thickness 12.75mm, weight 181.18g or 6.4oz. Another crude weight apparently cast in a spoon is KENT-0EF490. A medieval or post medieval date is most likely.

A lead disc of uncertain date and function. It has a diameter of 40.74mm, thickness 4.19mm, weight 37.66g. The front is decorated with a central raised small circular boss surrounded by 10 sub triangular or petal shaped pieces radiating outwards. They are surrounded by a raised line which forms a border between the design and a border legend. The inscription reads: "[E]DWARD (SCARBROUGHE ANG)". The reverse of the disc is plain. There is damage to two areas of the edge, opposite each other, so there is a slight possibility that there was originally attachment points in these places. T…

A lead alloy spherical perforated weight or possibly a spindle whorl. The weight is sub-spherical with flattened ends where the large central perforation truncates the ball. The inside walls of the hole are straight. Other weights of this shape have been suggested to be net or line weights from fishing. Modern line weights are similar but tend to have a smaller perforation. The well developed patina suggests that the weight has some age, but it is not possible to suggest the period. Similar examples on the database include DENO-229A56, SUSS-FE5867, HESH-722D51 and SWYOR-517B43.

Two lead alloy weights. Both are circular in section and oval in plan. They each have a circular central hole running through the length of the weight. These are probably line or net weights from fishing. They cannot be closely dated and are usually said to be Medieval to Modern, about 1200 - 1900 AD. These have a well developed creamy patina. Compare WAW-045791, SWYOR-6E7EF0 and HESH-723644. Each is 25mm long, by 17mm diameter. On weighs 36.64g (the one with an unpatinated gash of damage), and the other 35.77g.

A complete cast lead alloy line weight of unknown date, Roman to Post Medieval (1st to 17th Centuries AD). The weight is spherical in shape. The central hole is broadly circular and is positioned centrally. The internal diameter measures 3.8mm. This would seem too small for the object to be a spindle whorl. There is a slight median ridge. The weight measures 13.25mm in length and has a diameter of 15.6mm. It weighs 15.82 grams. It is mid to light grey colour, with an even patina. It has signs of being abraded and rolled in the plough soil. This type of weight has been in u…

A lead alloy line or net weight of uncertain date. It is constructed from a thick sheet of lead alloy that has been rolled into a tube. One end is flared open, but this seems to be post depositional damage, as stress marks from the bending disturb the patina. The seam is open all the way along. The ends do not appear to be broken. It has a patchy patina, being a mixture of pale cream and light brown. The sheet is 2-3mm thick.

A lead alloy perforated object, a probable weight of uncertain date. The object is 69.4mm long, 27.1mm wide and 20mm thick. It weighs 120.7g which is 4.26oz. The object is a pointed oval in plan with a large round loop at one end. In section, the body of the weight is lozenge shaped; there is a ridge along the centre of each face, and round the edge with four convex panels created between the ridges. At the top, the centre ridges divide to form a ridge round the loop, which in effect is bevelled. The four panels of the body are decorated in relief. Two panels on one face are decorat…

A lead alloy object which is probably a perforated weight of uncertain date. The object is sub-conical and is extensively distorted and pitted. It is 17.3mm long and 22.4mm in diameter. There is a sub-circular hole through the centre of the cone which is smaller at the top than at the bottom. This could suggest that the weight was used as a spindle whorl, as the shaping of the hole would prevent the whorl falling of the spindle. It is also possible that the perforation could have had another function, such as to attach the weight to a fishing net. Helen Geake writes: “It is very diff…
