An iron buckle of unknown date. It is 39.38mm long, 35.25mm wide and 7.1mm thick. It weighs 21.72g. The frame is rectangular and is not decorated, though the outer edge is slightly curved. The pin is also iron and was probably bent round the bar, but is now only attached by corrosion, the loop having broken. Buckles as functional as this could have been used at any date. The object was found at Towton Battlefield, but it is not known whether it is related to the battle in 1461.

A copper alloy pin from a buckle, or possibly a brooch, of uncertain date, Roman to Post Medieval. The pin is D shaped in section and is bent into an open loop at the attachment end. There is a longitudinal groove along the centre of the pin loop. The pin itself tapers from the loop to a blunt point. The pin is made from a piece of metal which is 2.2mm thick. The metal has a grey green patina. As brooch and buckle pins change very little in style, it is impossible to closely identify this object, but it is perhaps most likely that the pin is from a Medieval or Post Medieval buckle.

A copper alloy sheet buckle plate, of Medieval or possibly Early Medieval date. The piece is formed of a sub-rectangular strip of copper alloy, folded in half where it would have been wrapped round the buckle frame, and now broken across the hinges. It is wider at the frame end than at the attachment end. The hinges are notched to accomodate the sides of the frame and there is a slot for the pin. The frame and pin are missing. At the attachment end is a single copper alloy, central rivet. The plate has a light grey green patina. It is 25.7mm long, 10.8mm wide and 3.6mm thick. 2.03g.…

A copper alloy buckle plate with a badly corroded incomplete iron frame and pin. It is of uncertain date, Medieval to post Medieval, perhaps AD 1300 - 1900. All that remains of the frame is part of the bar. There is an accretion of corrosion where the pin would have been attached which is probably its remains. The buckle plate is made of a single piece of sheet copper alloy folded around the bar. It is oblong in shape but the corners have been cut off at 45 degrees at the attachment end. The remains of an iron rivet can be seen on each face of the plate, which would have passed throug…

A copper alloy fragment of a Roman military style zoomorphic buckle. A little less than half of the object survives. It is 28.5mm long, 27.1mm wide and 8.1mm thick. The buckle would have been in the form of two animal heads face to face forming the frame, and their tails forming the bar. Just one animal from this buckle survives. The side of the bar that would have joined the plate is flat and rough, with file marks visible. The opposite face of the bar is peaked, making the bar a pentagon in section. The bar thickens and becomes rounder as it merges with the frame at the sides and f…

A copper alloy buckle dating from the Roman period, abdout AD 200 - 410. The frame is D shaped but is unusual in being thicker than it is wide, as if the outer edge is made of a strip of metal in its side. The bar is a separate piece which has been riveted through the sides of the frame. The pin is cut from sheet and is wrapped round the bar. The plate is rectangular and is folded round the bar with a slot for the pin. A single copper alloy rivet at the attachment end holes the sheets together. There is no decoration. This unusual construction gives the buckle a homemade appearance. T…

Part of a copper alloy Roman buckle plate. The frame of the buckle is missing, as is the pin. The plate has a transverse bar at one end from which two loops project. These would have attached the plate to the axis bar of the frame. The gap between the loops is where the pin would have been attached. The body of the plate is broken. The surviving part seems to be in the form of two trumpet coils facing towards the bar, leaving an open triangular hole between them and it. The trumpets are broken after the bells, but there would have been rounded holes inside the coils. The front of the …

A fragment of copper alloy, probably part of a late Roman zoomorphic Dolphin Buckle dating from AD 350 - 450. Only one terminal of the bar and a short length of the frame survives. The buckle would have been in the form of two opposed dolphins. The edge of the frame is bevelled and the front face is decorated with incised lines forming the crest on the back of the dolphin. The dolphin's tail forms the terminal at the end of the bar. The ends of the fragment are patinated breaks. The metal has a dark brown patina. The terminals are corroded and damaged; one survives better but the other is missing. A copper alloy Roman buckle dating from AD 43 - 410. It has an oval frame with internal projections on either side of the pin and a plain outer edge. There is an incomplete integral spacer, slotted to accomodate the pin, with a bar near the frame round which the thick copper alloy sheet pin is looped. The sides of the spacer taper away from the frame, so the plate may have been triangular. There is the remains of a rivet in each arm of the spacer, near the frame, suggesting that it was covered with sheet plates. The buckle has a grey green patina. It is 35.2mm long, 29.5mm wide and 7.…

A copper alloy double looped post medieval buckle. Only the frame survives and this curves upwards on each side of the bar. This may suggest it was used at the ankle or knee where the angle of the frame would make it easier to fasten. The buckle is 47.8mm long, 30.2mm wide and 2.6mm thick. Each loop of the frame is oval and there is a trefoil moulding at each end and on each side. The reverse is flat and undecorated. The buckle has a dark brown patina and there are traces of tinning. There are similar examples on page 65 of “Buckles” by Ross Whitehead which are dated to c. 1550 – 1650.

The functional frame is then ornamented with an oval openwork outer frame made up of scrolls and foliage with bilobed projections at each end and five-lobed projections at each end of the bar. The frame was gilded. The pin and plate are missing. An almost identical example can be seen on page 80 of Ross Whitehead’s “Buckles” which is dated between 1620 and 1690.
