A lead alloy probable weight with fragments of a probable iron suspension loop surviving. The date of this object is unknown. The object is a lopsided cone shape with a rounded top and a roughened bottom. It has a diameter of 15.9mm and is 15.4mm thick. There is a small circular hole in the top of the object in which are the traces of ferrous material. It is not clear how far through the object the hole continues. It may reach the base but the rough surface is corroded and the surface is not visible. The object has a deep patina and is yellowish grey in colour. Lead weights are very im…

A lead alloy object which is unidentified. The artifact is roughly cone shaped but with a rounded and faceted lower half and concave sides. The top is also rounded making the shape rather like a pear. The object has a diameter of 22.8mm and is 19.3mm thick. In the centre of the flat base is an irregular sub-triangular hole that extends about halfway into the centre of the object. The function of this object is unknown. It may be a weight and the hole could be to adjust the mass exactly. It could also have contained a copper alloy plug also for fine adjustment. Lead weights are very imp…

A copper alloy fragment of an unidentified object. The piece consists of two sheets of copper alloy which are riveted together to form a T shape. One sheet (the cross of the T) is rectangular but bent and damaged at one end. There are two rivet holes in the centre of the lower edge which contain flattened copper alloy rivets attaching the two pieces together. There are also two rivet holes in the upper edge as if another element was afixed here. These holes are damaged. The second plate is flared with the wide end attached to the first plate. The narrower end is a break, but the sides…

A stone or pebble which is flat on one face and rounded (convex) on the other; oval in plan. It has been glazed with white to pale green glassy glaze with black speckles in it. It may have been decorated to use it as a gaming counter. It is of comparable size to stone and ceramic gaming pieces found at York in Anglo-Saxon contexts (Mainman and Rogers 2000, page 2566), one of which has a splash of glaze on it. Glass counters are also known from the Roman period; see for example GLO-88A182 for details. There is also evidence of rounded pebbles have been utilized as gaming pieces th…

A copper alloy fitting, perhaps from a strap or harness of unknown date, but possibly Iron Age or Roman. The object, perhaps a strap union, consists of a chunky rectangular loop which extends at one end into an angular bead-like moulding (biconical) which links the rectangular loop to a smaller circular loop. There is possible slight wear at the far end of the circular loop, perhaps suggesting that the fitting was suspended here. The whole object is thick and stocky, but the apertures of the loops are unusually small for harness; the circular loop has an internal diameter of 4.2mm and…

An unidentified iron and copper alloy object of unknown date, possibly Post Medieval. The object is an incomplete sub-circular loop of iron with a copper alloy casing, consisting of (probably) seven triangular lobes, integrally cast, each projecting outwards. The space inside the loop is thus heptagonal. Four of the lobes survive, with two partial ones remaining at the ends. There is space for one more posited matching example, but this area could equally have had a different feature or an attachment point.
