Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A lead alloy hooked tag which is post medieval. It is 27.2mm long, 17.7mm wide and 7mm thick. The tag has a rectangular plate with large beadwork round the edge and a raised rectangle in the centre. Hidden behind the plate on the reverse is a rectangular loop at one end of the plate, and the stub of a projecting hook at the other. The lead thickens round the hook stub, and there is a tiny fragment of a dark brown patinated copper alloy, so in this example the hook was copper alloy. Only the part of the hook which was encased in lead alloy has survived. The lead has a deep cream colour…

A post medieval lead alloy incomplete button, only the front surviving. The button is domed with a central pimple and stepped concentric rings round the edge. It has a diameter of 16.6mm and is 6.5mm thick. Buttons of this type were made in two parts with a pewter front and a separate back piece and loop that were often made of iron, as was probably the case with this example. There is ferrous corrosion on the reverse and a corroded piece of wire inside the hollow back that is probably part of the loop. A similar button can be seen on page 50 of ‘Buttons and Fasteners’ by Bailey (2…

County: Leeds
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper alloy finger ring from the post medieval period. The hoop of the ring is broken, but none seems to be missing. The hoop is narrow at the back (2.1mm wide) but quickly widens to form a bezel which is shield shaped, with three lobes at the top and bottom of the shield, and concave sides. On either side of the shield is a single flower, perhaps a rose. The ring is corroded and worn. If there was any decoration on the shield, it is no longer visible. The ring is 23mm long, 15.3mm wide at the bezel, and 10.5mm thick from front to back, the hoop being squashed. It has a dark brown …

A copper alloy and gilt possible scabbard chape which probably dates from the post medieval period. The chape consists of a cast convex front piece and possibly a sheet back plate which is mostly missing. The chape is 29.1mm long, 18.1mm wide and 4.6mm thick. The front piece is sub triangular with a truncated and rounded lower point and the top is broken. It looks as if the top edge would have been V shaped, but the plate is broken into two pieces so this is not certain. The front of the chape is moulded into what appear to be foliage designs, but the metal is corroded and the decorati…
