An incomplete copper plated iron barrel padlock of early medieval to medieval date, about AD 950 - 1400, perhaps more likely to be from the later end of the range suggested. Only a fragment of the case survives. It is part of a cylinder made of iron with a copper alloy surface coating. The outer face is decorated with longitudinal ridges. Only part of one end plate survives and it is not clear if the incomplete hole in it is an intentional keyhole or corrosion. Measurements are; length 34.1mm, width 26.6mm, thickness 14.9mm and weight 15.0g. Compare WMID-D898F7, BUC-BBEC0A a…

An incomplete iron artefact, of Roman date, AD 41 - 410. It is sub-rectangular in plan, square at one end and tapering and curving to a rounded point at the other. The main body of the artefact is thicker along one edge than the other and the rounded point, which is set at a slight angle to the orientation of the main portion, is also thinner than the main body. One side of the main body is flat and the other side is slightly concave, though this may be a consequence of the heavy degree of corrosion. The artefact is 84.2mm long, 31.4mm wide and 13.1mm thick. It weighs&nb…

An incomplete iron socketed tool of Roman date, AD 43 - 410. It is roughly triangular in plan, and rectangular in cross-section. One end has parallel sides and tapers in thickness to a break, and in the other direction tapers to the remains of a socket. The socket area expands in width, and has incomplete sides that start to turn over at the top. The wide end may also be broken. Measurements are; length 92.8mm, width 43.3mm, thickness 16.1mm and weight 114.95g. It could be a socketed area at one end of an adze, chisel, or other socketed tool. A baluster shaped unidentified object of probably Post medieval date, AD 1700 - 1900. It has an iron core, and an outer of a grey, grainy material that can be scratched with a finger nail, and leaves a streak on paper (possibly a burnt ceramic or organic material). A hand-forged Medieval to Post Medieval wrought iron Axehead dating from about AD 1250 - 1800. The axehead has a near straight top-edge with slight curve to the end of the blade, and a slight bulge at the socket. The underside angles from the heel of the blade to the handle to form a tapering triangular shape. It starts to curve down at the socket, but damage here makes it impossible to suggest the extent of any possible "beard". The socket is triangulat in plan with a thickened butt-end and an overlapping wrought joint. The material appears to be wrought …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast iron cannon ball, and judging from the size and weight, probably for use in a Falconet or similar small artillery weapon, dating from about AD 1500-1900. A Falconet was a small cannon used both on land and in light naval vessels. A number were used during the English Civil War (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falconet_(cannon). The iron ball is spherical and corroded. It is 65mm diameter and 992g (2lb, 3oz). Iron balls were also used in various industrial milling operations, such as crushing chalk for whiting, so a modern date cannot be ruled out. https://finds.org.uk/co…

It appears to be a flat gilded copper alloy cap over a central iron object. It is not clear how much is missing from the sides. It is decorated with interlaced ribbons which have border lines filled with a row of dots. The socket tapers to the solid neck which is square in cross-section. The neck continues to taper to a point. It is uncertain if this is a break or whether the object is complete. It is 143.9mm long, 22.7mm wide and 16.4mm thick. 77.9g. It is unclear whether the pointed end is a break and the object would have continued into a spear head, perhaps one similar to WAW-71A829, or whether this is the intended…

An iron hand bell of probable Early Medieval date, AD 700 - 1100. It has a rounded rectangular opening at the base, and tapers to the top so the two main faces are rectangular and the sides are triangular. It was made by folding a sheet of iron, so there is a seam down the centre of each side. There are two broken projections from the top, which were probably part of a ring handle; one can be seen extending into the inside of the bell too. The clapper is missing. The surface is rusted and has lumps of corrosion. There is no visible copper surface, so it is not possible to say if the b…

A probably Medieval iron axehead dating from AD 1100 - 1500. The socket is incomplete, with one face missing. The cutting edge is convex, or this may be a broken end. It is wider than the rest of the blade, which tapers smoothly to the socket. The sides of the socket are shaped into a point so the socket is taller than the neck of the blade. It is covered with corrosion. Weight is 1470g, Length 262mm, Width 98mm and Thickness 28mm. It is a thick plaque of iron, broadly sub-triangular in plan with a partial circular design on the front face. Within a recessed annular band are the letters [...]ORAN[...] in relief, perhaps a manufacturer's name. They are uppercase seriffed Roman letters. An iron sword pommel from a large sword, of Medieval date, AD 1100 - 1400. The pommel is sub-spherical and hollow, and has an oval hole through its length which would have housed the tang, and which would have had a securing 'end cap' terminal at the other end. The pommel has eight vertical ribs running down the length of the body, the iron corrosion possibly hiding evidence for copper strips, while there is a faint casting seam around its girth. It is about 56.0mm, height approximately 45.0mm. weight about 135.0g. BERK-65B4A2 is a very similar example. The record notes that: "A…
