An incomplete Roman copper alloy trumpet-derivative brooch of the Alcester type.
The head is hollow, of semi-circular section and flares towards the top. On the underside of the head, one side of the opening is damaged; at the opposite end are the remains of the lug that would have held in place the now-missing spring. The remains of a chain-loop project upwards from the top of the head. An incomplete copper-alloy artefact, possibly representing half of a Medieval open-frame brooch.
The piece consits of a curved, parallel-sided strip, the upper surface of which is decorated by a moulded pattern of interlocking chevrons. At one end the curve terminates in a cuboidal moulding; at the opposite end it tapers into a vertical projection of triangular section. The reverse of the piece is flat and plain.
Dimensions: 33.2mm long, 15mm wide, 3.1mm thick. Weight: 2.5g.
